Daughters of Norway to learn about stave churches

RAINBOW – At their meeting on April 11, at 11 a.m., the Daughters of Norway – Hulda Garborg Lodge will view the video, “Building a Dream,” that describes how Guy Paulson came to build a full scale replica of the Hopperstad Stavkirke, a 12th century Norwegian stave church.

It is believed that there may have been as many as 2,000 stave churches in existence at the end of the 13th century. Today less than 30 original stave churches remain. The exact replica is on the grounds of the Hjemkost Center in Moorhead, Minn. It looks like a small wooden cathedral, built around a framework of Norway pine logs and has a sharply pitched roof, towering steeple and ornately carved religious and pagan symbols.

All women of Scandinavian heritage are invited to attend Daughters of Norway meetings. Hulda Garborg Lodge #49 holds its meetings on the second Saturday of each month at the Rainbow Valley Grange Hall, 2160 Rainbow Valley Boulevard.
