Herb Young celebrates 90th birthday

Herb Young of Fallbrook celebrated his 90th birthday on November 12 with his family and friends. His wife, Dodie, coordinated the festivities.

Herb was born in New Jersey and spent his childhood in Rockville Center, NY. He later attended Colorado School of Mines and graduated with a degree in mining engineering in 1939. He worked in Chile and Arizona after graduation and later moved to Long Beach, CA, where he met and married his wife Dodie in 1952. A short time later they moved to Mammoth Lakes, CA, where they built and operated the first ski lodge primarily for skiers, “The Christiania.” After 12 years of hard work, they sold the business and began to travel both here and abroad.

Their love of the outdoors led them to an appreciation of nature through their backpacking trips in the High Sierra. They became interested in environmental causes, believing that people do not have to destroy the beauty of the earth for purely monetary gain.

Now the culmination of their dream has led to the establishment of the Young Environmental program at the Colorado School of Mines in conjunction with the National Audubon Society. With this program, Herb and Dodie hope to influence young people — and people of all ages — about the importance of preserving and nurturing the planet in which we live.

In April 2006 Herb and Dodie attended their symposium at Colorado School of Mines in which Jared Diamond was the featured speaker. His subject was his book “Collapse,” which has been given excellent reviews. His previous book, “Guns, Germs and Steel,” won the Pulitzer Prize.

Herb has been a member of the Fallbrook Planning Group and for many years worked as a volunteer in the Bottom Shelf of the Fallbrook Public Library.
