Megan’s Law Sex Offender Database Now Available Online
“The online Megan’s Law database is an important first step to better equip parents and concerned citizens by protecting our children against sexual predators. Much more must be done to ensure that our children are not placed in harms way and that these predators are behind bars and off of our streets in the first place, but through this new medium citizens can now take a proactive step to keep our communities safe for our loved ones.” —Senator Bill Morrow
The California Department of Justice has recently unveiled a new web site providing information on the more than 63,000 registered sex offenders throughout the state. This site allows the public for the first time to use the internet to look up information on sex offenders who are required to register with local law enforcement under California’s Megan’s Law. Previously, the registry list was only accessible at police stations and sheriff offices, or by calling a 900 toll-number.
California’s Megan’s Law provides the public with certain information on sex offenders in the community so that families can protect themselves and their children. Megan’s Law is named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed by a convicted child molester who had moved across the street from the family without their knowledge. In the wake of the tragedy, the Kankas sought to have local communities warned about sex offenders in the area.
To access the registry database, please visit the California Department of Justice’s Megan’s Law Web site or http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov/
Here you will be able to search by name, ZIP code, city, and county for registered offenders. In addition, the site provides valuable information on how to protect your family, how to report a sex crime, and details on the sex offender registration requirements in California.
