AVID students explore careers

FALLBROOK — The first Career Exploration Day for the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students from Fallbrook High School was held at the home of Chris Young, AVID coordinator. The event was sponsored by mentors from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The keynote speaker was Annterese Toth from Banc of America Investment Services. Her motivational message was entitled “Don’t Ever Give Up.”

Fifteen presenters, who represented a multitude of careers, were present to engage in dialogue with the AVID students. Six career stations represented medical technology, education, art design, computer technology, engineering, legal services and business, financial services. An FBI agent and a Lt. Colonel from the US Army were two of the most unusual careers. During the day, Jack Ragland, noted local artist, demonstrated painting techniques and answered questions about career opportunities in art-related fields.

AVID students at Fallbrook High School are determined to go to college. The mentors from AAUW offer a support system that includes making scholarships available to help with finances.
