Boards, Ashbrook, Peavey, Velasquez recognized as Students of the Month

Four students in the Fallbrook Union High School District were honored for outstanding achievements in academics, community involvement, and being leaders among their peers at the Fallbrook Student of the Month program on Dec. 5. Monique Boards of Oasis High School and Madison Ashbrook, Nick Peavey, and Hannah Velasquez of Fallbrook Union High School (FUHS) were recognized at a breakfast event held at the Fallbrook Community Center.

FUHS ASB director Mike Lilly thanked the Student of the Month committee for picking out the best Boards, Ashbrook, Peavey, Velasquez recognized and brightest students, finding the good “when it is so easy to find the bad.”

The first award presented to each of the four students was the Lamp of Knowledge medal, presented by Frank Larkin and Karl Fekete, representatives of American Legion Post 365.

Monique Boards was nominated for the student of the month honor by Oasis High teacher Kevin Kent. “[Monique] is personable, bright, compassionate and caring,” Kent said; “when listing her favorite pastimes, she wrote that she likes to do things for people without them knowing about it.”

Boards, who graduated two days before the breakfast, was said to be an exceptional writer who performed to the best of her ability in her projects, and a very positive person who has served on every committee at Oasis.

“It is an honor to receive this award,” Boards said while acknowledging a constant push from her family to do her best. She will be attending Orange Coast College and wants to become a flight attendant.

Madison Ashbrook was recommended by Fallbrook High field hockey coach Kathy Waite and teacher Dave Evans. In his nomination letter, Evans wrote, “Madison is an outstanding student, a scholar-athlete and youth group leader at North Coast Church – she is the full package.”

Waite said Ashbrook, who was captain of the field hockey team, and named to both all-league and all-CIF teams, is “the fight and drive of the team.”

Ashbrook was described as feisty, always striving to improve and a team player who is ready to go the extra mile and willing to help others.

Ashbrook thanked Evans and Waite who “taught me the importance of hard work,” as well as thanking her parents. She said she found a heart and home at UC Berkeley where she plans on majoring in business before going to law school.

Nick Peavey was nominated for the student of the month honor by Fallbrook High teacher Estay Paulsen who said, “Nick is strong, confident, excels at everything, is a natural leader and humble. He has an afterschool job and gives his money to his family.”

Peavey was also said to be a straight-A student, manager at a local sports park, a good person who is very reliable and always there for everyone. He gives back to the community, his family and friends.

Peavey said, “This is a very great honor I am happy to receive.” He said he has applied to several colleges with plans to major in psychology so he can help the community.

Hannah Velasquez was chosen by Fallbrook High teacher Connie Fellios who said Velasquez “is one of the finest students, exuberant, articulate, extremely intelligent, focused, and an infectiously positive student.”

Velasquez was described as having strong moral character and grace, being a voracious reader and poignant writer, president of the California Scholarship Federation chapter at FUHS, news anchor of the school’s daily news, and a volunteer tutor. It was said she loves to learn, to run and to cook, and doesn’t like to miss school.

Velasquez said it is “a great honor to be selected.” She thanked her father for his support and said she had learned “hard work does pay off.” She has applied to five colleges with Columbia being her first choice and wants to major in business so she can manage or own a company.

The Fallbrook Student of the Month breakfast is funded by generous local businesses and organizations, including Major Market, Pedro’s Tacos, Robert P. Mohr D.D.S./M.S., Fallbrook PTSA, Law Offices of Faunce, Singer & Oatman – a professional corporation, Fallbrook Vintage Car Club, and Sheri’s Flowers.
