Cash prizes offered in VFW patriotic essay contest

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1924 announces it is now taking entries for its annual essay contests.

The Voice of Democracy (VOD) essay contest is open to students in grades 9 to 12 who are enrolled in a local school. This year’s theme is, “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future.” VOD awards begin at the local level with first place prize of $500, second place of $300, and third place of $200.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. This year’s theme is “What Patriotism Means to me.” Patriot’s Pen awards include $300 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third.

Essay entry deadline is November 1 and should be submitted to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1924, 1175 Old Stage Road, Fallbrook.

After the local contest, prizes are then offered at district, state, and national levels.
