Pioneer Days a hit at Maie Ellis

FALLBROOK — For several years, Maie Ellis Elementary PTA has contributed monies to have ‘Pioneer Living’ come to present to the third grade students. Groups of students enjoy the experience of hands-on pioneer activities for about an hour, making more real, in our students’ minds, what it was like to live 150 years ago. They wash clothes with a washboard, grind wheat into flour, play with old-fashioned toys such as a Jacob’s Ladder, make a wool friendship bracelet and participate in many other activities from the time. There are also information boards with lots of examples and details of life back then. Our third-graders study the history of Fallbrook from the first residents, the Luiseño Native Americans, to the first settlers, and on to present day.
