Skating through January

Fallbrook FFA is starting the New Year off right by having their January meeting at Ice-O-Plex. On January 12, the whole FFA chapter is going ice skating and will then proceed with their monthly meeting. Another great way to start the year is by having their parliamentary procedure team start back up again. The Parli-Pro team will attend various competitions throughout the year. Good luck, Parli-Pro.

On January 14, 15 FFA members are traveling to Ontario to attend a special leadership conference. All sophomores will be attending a session called “Made for Excellence,” and the juniors’ and seniors’ session will be on “Advanced Leadership Development.” All members will be able to meet other students from FFA chapters in the southern region.

Super Saturday is almost here! On February 5, all of the 4H clubs in the county come together to have a day of fun-filled hands-on activities. Each club brings a fun activity to the event, and in a large room members can go from station to station. At this event, 4H members will be able to communicate and get some great ideas from other 4H clubs in the county. Last year one of the more popular activities was learning to make chemo caps for those children and adults stricken with cancer. This year’s event is taking place in Jamul. Teen council members are preparing a hands-on event, and leaders who would like to learn more about 4H programs are invited to attend.

Steve Dasher from the San Diego 4H office came to Fallbrook 4H’s community meeting on January 4. Mr. Dasher informed the club about fire recovery in our county and shared a Power Point presentation with the club. Fourteen different clubs now have fire recovery as one of their projects, and they travel around to the county wildfire sites to calculate the growing rate of plants and see how the land changes through time. How, you might ask, do they arrive at the same spot every time? Through the use of maps, GPS coordinates and compass headings, members can pinpoint the exact spot, which can be photographed in all directions. Our fire recovery group is scheduled to make their rounds to sites that they are recording Sunday, January 15, if the weather cooperates. All of this rain should make for some very interesting observations.

The rug hooking class is beginning January 29 at 9:30 a.m. at FPUD. Interested 4H members and their parents can still sign up to be part of this new project. Community members might also like to check out this activity, which meets the last Saturday of each month. A great New Year’s resolution could be to start a new hobby. Call (760) 723-6171 for more information.
