Spanish class in Spain

This week the Bonsall Charter is on spring break! That’s right: the common student’s ace in the hole. This year as an added bonus BCAL’s Spanish class — yes, we have one — is going to Spain (me included). A few of the cities that will be visited are Seville, Granada and the capitol city Madrid. These cities are built on top of the remains of the Moorish and Renaissance metropolises that preceded it. The architecture is unlike anything we have in the states, massive churches, powerful castles and aqueducts. For those who have never been I’d be happy to paint you a picture; Europe has a look and feel all its own. It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before! Cobblestone streets are crowded with hatchbacks and economy cars burning the same gas that we use but at a radically elevated price. Courtyards are crammed full of cafés, no seat is left vacant; the people sit sipping their coffee, wine or beer while watching the grass grow. Time is viewed with a different perspective by these people; making money is not as important as leisure. The only signs that may be reminiscent of home are the American fast food icons — McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King — that are littered throughout the city.

Being a predominately Catholic nation, Easter is one of the largest celebrations held. The streets are packed with spectators waiting for the inevitable processions. Men wear oddly shaped hats that look like upside-down ice cream cones as part of their penitence. They also carry floats depicting scenes of Jesus Christ’s life. On Holy Wednesday in a town called Malaga, an actual prisoner is released as part of the celebration; this ritual has been practiced since the medieval ages, though for another reason. Back then when the black plague ran wild, no better person was suited to carrying the cross down the streets.

Tying in with this trip, the seniors are reading “The Sun Also Rises” by Earnest Hemmingway, which takes place in Spain. My advice to anyone interested in an amazing cultural experience and wanting to capture a memory that will never fade should try to visit Spain during “Holy Week.” But plan on doing it European-style; relax, take your time and soak in the wonderful food, amazing history and friendly people.
