Fallbrook Music Society to present all-Mozart program

FALLBROOK – The sounds of Amadeus will fill the Bob Burton Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Nov. 24, as Jon Robertson, conductor of Redlands Symphony Orchestra, leads the musicians through a program which features three selections composed by Salzburg’s favorite son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The concert opens with the Overture to Mozart’s opera, “Don Giovanni.” While it took several weeks for Mozart to compose the opera, it took him a single evening to compose the overture, one of the great all-time overtures in the repertoire.

Mozart’s well-known Concerto for Flute and Harp is a beautiful and masterfully-written composition featuring two instruments that require extreme delicacy in combination, against an orchestral background. This piece was composed in Paris for a French count and his daughter, and it has a distinctively French style with a magically interwoven sound - using both instruments to their fullest.

Featured in this composition will be Redlands Symphony’s own principal flute Sara Andon, who is an international soloist and recording artist known for her ravishing tone and deeply engaging musical interpretations.

Also featured in this concert is one of Mozart’s last three symphonies, the forceful and magnificent Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major. In the summer of 1788, Mozart completed three extraordinary symphonies, the last such works he would write.

This ‘final trilogy’ as it is often called, represents the brilliant culmination of the Classical-period symphony. No similar works of the 18th century surpass these compositions in strength, intricacy or beauty. Mozart might never have heard this piece performed, but following the performance, audience members will know that they have experienced one of the great, mature works of his genius.

The Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts is at 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane; the concert starts at 3 p.m. on Nov. 24. Conductor Jon Robertson will present a pre-concert talk about the program at 2:45 p.m., which is open to all ticketholders.
