FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Music Society proudly presents its sixth annual Christmas concert, featuring a special performance of Handel’s choral masterpiece, “Messiah,” on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. Artistic Director Krishan Oberoi leads the Sacra/Profana choir, with orchestra, in this production of “Messiah,” one of the most popular works in Western choral literature.
Jane Lorenz, President of Fallbrook Music Society, said, “This is a rare opportunity for North San Diego County residents to experience one of the most dramatic and emotional works in the classical repertoire. ‘Messiah’ is a monumental work appreciated by people of all ages and faiths, and it always inspires with its stirring choruses and sublime arias.” “We are thrilled to present this concert in Fallbrook, and we anticipate a full-house,” she added.
Composed in just three weeks during the summer of 1741, Handel’s “Messiah” became a Christmas tradition while the composer was still alive, and received annual benefit performances in London from 1750 until Handel’s death. From its soaring solos to the famous “Hallelujah” chorus, “Messiah” has earned a place among the favorite works in the classical canon.
Since its debut in 2009, Sacra/Profana has rapidly been gaining a reputation as an exciting new voice in American choral music. This 21-voice ensemble specializes in a unique blend of classic and contemporary styles, and it is committed to awakening and nurturing enthusiasm for the choral art through vibrant performances.
A New York native, artistic director Krishan Oberoi is a passionate conductor whose exciting programming is bolstered by a firm grounding in musical tradition. He attended the Yale School of Music, earning his master’s degree in conducting in 2006. He has performed extensively with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, San Diego Opera and Bach Collegium San Diego. In 2009, Oberoi founded the professional chamber choir Sacra/Profana.
The “Messiah” concert will be held Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. in the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts, 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane.
