Grange Livestock Show is a family affair

Six families from Rainbow Valley Grange put on this year’s Show Season Opener Livestock Show on April 21, 2007. The Komskis, Fontanas, Dunckels, Lathrops, Donoghues and Varvels prepared Riders Field, ran the show, kept records and handed out ribbons as well as cooked food and conducted a Silent Auction. Their children not only helped, they also competed with their animals.

The animal classes included steer, sheep, Boer [goat], dairy goats and pygmy goats. Animal groups including 4-H clubs and FFA members came from all over Southern California to practice their animal showing skills in preparation for this year’s fairs. Grange Youth and Junior members who participated were Missy Dunckel, Sarah Fontana, Maddison Varvel, Jenna Lathrop, Andrew Donoghue, Aspen Komski, Shavonne Donoghue, Kevin Fontana, Chris Dunckel and Keira Donoghue.

The Grange’s next endeavor is a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the Grange Hall from 8 to 10 a.m. Besides pancakes, the breakfast includes scrambled eggs, a choice of bacon or sausage, toast, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. Prices are reasonable and the proceeds will go to their hall renovation fund. After breakfast, diners can go to the Rainbow Days Picnic, at Rainbow Park on Fifth St., which includes a BBQ lunch, children’s activities, raffle a plant sale at Vallecitos School, and an hour of karaoke 1-2 p.m.. The Picnic is held by Rainbow Property Owners Association in cooperation with every civic organization in Rainbow: Rainbow Valley Grange and Junior Grange, Rainbow Fire Dept., Rainbow Planning Group, Vallecitos PTO and Vallecitos School District.
