Meyers to speak about organic gardening

FALLBROOK- The Fallbrook Garden Club evening section will hold its next meeting on Wed., Oct. 19. at 7 p.m. at the Fallbrook Public Utility District located at 990 E. Mission Ave. Adrienne McCrumb of the San Diego Regional Energy Office will discuss how you can participate and apply for free shade trees.

The San Diego Regional Energy Office, in cooperation with People for Trees, is giving away over 17,000 shade trees to single-family homes, multi-family buildings, and K-12 schools throughout Orange and San Diego counties (must be an SDG&E customer). And these are not little tiny trees either. These are full-sized, 10 to 15-gallon nursery quality specimens in your choice of over 20 varieties. Each home can receive up to five trees per household. Program information and applications will be available at the meeting.

Dan Meyers, Manager, Grangetto’s Farm and Garden Supply, Fallbrook, will discuss the benefits of organic gardening at the October general meeting of the Fallbrook Garden Club, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m., at the Fallbrook Community Center located at 341 Heald Lane.

According to Dan, the organic approach to gardening is a method that fosters a relationship between the soil, plants and the person that in the long run is beneficial for all. Using chemicals for tasks, like pest control and fertilizing, work, but are only a quick fix. Dan offers some suggestions on how the organic way, in the long run, requires less maintenance and upkeep and is equally effective and safer for the environment. He says it’s like taking care of our own bodies - if we eat right, exercise and get enough rest, we can do better in the long run than looking for the quick medical fix.

Dan Meyers has been manager of Grangetto’s for 10 years. Before that he had his own gardening and landscape business. He has studied horticulture and has learned, as he says “like most of us, by trial and error.” He will be available to answer questions following his

presentation.

In honor of the club’s 75th anniversary, the October general meeting will feature the music, dress and cars of the 1980’s. All members and guests are encouraged to dress the part.

All garden club programs and meetings are open to the public. For further information, contact Judy Farnan at 760-451-0792 or Jane McKee at 760-728-6373.
