Use coffee grounds in the garden

In honor of Earth Day, April 22, Starbucks would like to share an easy tip that not only helps gardens but also reduces organic waste in the environment. Customers are invited to pick up a free bag of spent coffee grounds through Starbucks’ Grounds for Your Garden program. The program, which began in 1995, offers complimentary coffee grounds to customers year-round, helping to reduce waste and enhance gardens in parks, schools, nurseries and private gardens across North America.

Coffee grounds offer a valuable source of nutrition for gardens and can be used in several ways:

• Customers can add grounds directly to their gardens. Mix this “green material” into the soil around nitrogen-loving plants, including most perennials and allium plants. Then, add “brown materials,” such as leaves or dried grass clippings, to help balance the nutrition of the soil.

• Customers can also blend grounds into their compost to accelerate the composting process. Use grounds within two to three weeks of brewing to capture the most nutritional value.

Complimentary bags of spent coffee grounds are available at all Starbucks retail locations. Stop by today and give your garden a perk!

Starbucks offers used coffee grounds to customers year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Earth Day is an excellent reminder to take little steps to improve the environment around us.
