20-year-old Fallbrook man pleads not guilty to indecent exposure and sexual battery charges

VISTA (Wire Service) - A man accused of repeatedly exposing himself to women as they walked through an open-space park near his home in Fallbrook pleaded not guilty today to three misdemeanor charges, including indecent exposure and sexual battery.

Austin Lee Harper, 20, was ordered held on $50,000 bail.

Investigators believe Harper "flashed'' female pedestrians in Los Jilgueros Preserve on South Mission Road on at least five occasions this month, San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Todd Richardson said.

Last Friday morning, Dec. 21, detectives were talking to Harper regarding an unrelated trespassing case when he allegedly revealed details that only the flasher would know. He also provided written evidence regarding the crimes,

Richardson said without elaboration.

Deputy District Attorney Ted Fiorito said the defendant was charged in connection with incidents on Dec. 7, Dec. 14, and Dec. 21.

Harper - who was on probation for assault at the time of his arrest - faces 18 months in jail if convicted, the prosecutor said.

The defendant will be back in court Jan. 2 for a readiness conference and Jan. 23 for trial.

Fallbrook Sheriff's Substation commander, Lt. Todd Richardson announced this afternoon (Dec. 21) that an arrest has been made relating to a man who was suspected of numerous incidences of indecent exposure over the last few days.

"During the week of December 10 through 16, Sheriff's Fallbrook Substation began receiving reports of a white male adult between the ages of 18-25, who had been following and exposing his genitals to women walking through Fallbrook's Los Jilgueros Preserve located in the 2100 block of South Mission Road, Fallbrook," said Richardson. "Five separate incidents were ultimately reported."

Richardson said, "Detectives worked diligently to identify and locate the subject. Several persons of interest were questioned and a decoy operation was performed with negative results."

Earlier today, one of the individuals that had been questioned in the case was contacted by officers on an unrelated trespassing offense.

"Subsequent to the arrest and during an interview of the subject, identified as Austin Harper (age 20 of Fallbrook), he made several specific statements which contained information that only the suspect or person involved in the incidents would have knowledge of. Harper also provided written evidence of the offenses."

Richardson said during the investigation, "detectives identified an additional case, which had occurred a week earlier in the 1800 block of Gum Tree Lane, where Harper had ridden a bicycle up to a young female and grabbed her arm."

In that incident, the female screamed and Harper rode off.
