Actress hasn't bought Bed and Breakfast

The changing of Oak Creek Manor into Chateau La Rue has not only caused a buzz in the small town of Fallbrook, but the news of Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott’s new Oxygen channel reality show, “Tori and Dean: Inn Love,” has been quite the talk in a variety of media venues. A flurry of print and television attention has erupted about their new bed and breakfast adventure. In addition to coverage in People Magazine and Access Hollywood, Spelling recently exchanged some friendly late night chatter with Jay Leno regarding her new baby and Chateau La Rue.

“Inn Love” has followed the couples’ steps in their quest for finding the perfect B&B, at the property negotiating table, a phone call acceptance of their offer and renovations and preparations for their grand opening and ensuing hoopla. It has been quite a whirlwind adventure for these newlyweds.

While Oxygen viewers have witnessed this Hollywood couple tearing out carpet, painting and refurnishing this lovely four-bedroom, 4.5-bath bed and breakfast, one lingering question remains. Who actually owns the eight-acre estate Chateau La Rue sits on? Did the celebrity couple buy it or not?

The Oxygen Web site has advertised the following: “Tori & Dean have decided to shake things up even more by leaving their Hollywood home, selling their stuff at an estate sale and investing Tori’s $800,000 inheritance into their new business venture – a bed and breakfast for their generation.” Other media venues have sung the same tune, claiming that Spelling used her $800,000 inheritance to purchase the bed and breakfast.A trip down to the San Diego County Assessors office on April 19 proved to be quite interesting. An assessment clerk, Ms. Lerma, easily pulled up the Chateau La Rue property address and reported that there had been no activity since 2004. There was no new document number and/or transaction for this residence.

“Nothing new has been recorded with the County of San Diego,” Lerma said. The assessment clerk explained that the computer systems were up to date, having only a three-day lapse for transactions.

So who are the property owners of this Fallbrook bed and breakfast? There is no one new. “Christopher King and Patricia King are still the owners,” asserted Lerma.

The Oak Creek Manor sign may have been replaced with a Chateau La Rue sign, but the documents of legal property ownership have stayed the same.

The next logical question would be whether or not the Hollywood couple is in escrow with this property. The answer, once more, is “no.” This licensed bed and breakfast property has been on the market for over 300 days and remains active on the Multiple Listing Service [MLS# 064049869].

On April 20, sources confirmed that the Kings’ listing agent admitted that the estate is still for sale, with the price reduced from the original $3.4 million to $2.6 million.

When considering the facts versus the image presented to the television-viewing public, it appears that the “Tori and Dean: Inn Love” reality show may not be reality after all.
