Angel Society philanthropic giving totals $26,900 for Sept. and Oct.

FALLBROOK – The Angel Society of Fallbrook recently donated $26,900 in philanthropic funds to several local nonprofits, school programs, and sports teams. The funds were approved by the group’s board of directors at meetings held in September and October.

A total of $7,000 was awarded to the Fallbrook Senior Center’s home delivery meal program. The center serves an average of 55 home meals a day and 30 to 60 meals per day at the Fallbrook Community Center. An estimated 30 percent of the program’s costs are paid with county funds, with the balance raised from private contributions.

The Fallbrook Food Pantry received $5,000 to help purchase food and help meet overhead expenses. The food pantry aids roughly 450 families each week. Of these, 45 percent are children and 20 percent are seniors. The Angels also paid $250 as a Silver Sponsor of the group’s Thanksgiving 5K Walk/Run to Feed the Hungry, held on Nov. 14.

The Fallbrook Citizens’ Crime Prevention Committee received $3,000 for its program to help steer at-risk youth away from gangs and drugs. Called GANAS, an acronym for Guide, Advise, Nurture and Support, the program offers after school mentoring for ages 9 through 14. Since its inception in 2005, the program has grown to six neighborhood sites where children meet with mentors from the community, as well as with AVID students from Fallbrook High School.

The Fallbrook Garden Club, FUHS Student of the Month program, and Operation Clear Vision each received $2,000.

The Garden Club used the funds to purchase material for a landscaping project at the entrance to the Senior Center on Heald Lane. Club members intend to plant 3,000 square feet with drought-resistant plants, rocks, mulch, boulders, and more.

The Student of the Month program honors four junior and senior students from the Fallbrook Union High School District at a breakfast held at the Fallbrook Community Center on the first Thursday of each month. The program’s annual cost is $6,000.

Operation Clear Vision provides lower pay-grade military families with eyeglasses. While military families do receive free vision exams, many do not receive an allowance for glasses. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Clear Vision has gifted nearly 4,000 pairs of glasses to military spouses and children.

Fallbrook Chorale, a nonprofit county choral group, was given $1,000. Organized for the purpose of providing vocal music to Fallbrook and the surrounding communities, the chorale performs at events held on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, 9-11 tributes and other area functions.

La Paloma Elementary received $750 in support of two assemblies, one on the subject of bullying, and the other on science.

The Angels gave $500 to the Fallbrook Village Rotary Foundation as gold sponsors of the upcoming 2015 Fallbrook Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Event proceeds go towards the Fallbrook Land Conservancy, Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary, and the Rotary.

Additionally, six youth programs received $500 each: Fallbrook A Leer, an annual event to promote literacy in the home and to encourage community service; Fallbrook Cheer; FUHS Girls’ volleyball, soccer and tennis teams; and Fallbrook Youth Baseball.

The Bonsall Woman’s Club received $400 to help sponsor its annual Christmas fundraiser for the community.

The Angel Society raises philanthropic funds through the operation of the Angel Shop, a thrift store at 1002 S. Main Avenue. Donations are welcome during regular business hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
