Collision in Valley Center kills one, injures four others

VALLEY CENTER - A head-on collision on a rural North County road killed a motorist today and injured a family of four.

The crash on Valley Center Road occurred about 11:45 a.m., when a southbound 1996 Toyota Camry veered over a set of double yellow lines and crashed into an oncoming 2007 Chrysler minivan near Cole Grade Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the sedan died at the scene. His name was not immediately available.

The other motorist, a 38-year-old La Mesa man, his 40-year-old wife and their 7-year-old twin boys were airlifted to hospitals for treatment of various injuries, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said. Their conditions were not released.

The CHP shut down traffic lanes between Mactan and Vesper roads into the mid-afternoon to allow for investigation and cleanup.

Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the accident, Bettencourt said.
