Community Read underway

The Friends of the Fallbrook Library’s second community read, featuring the works of John Steinbeck, is underway. The Steinbeck Photo Exhibit, courtesy of the Center for Steinbeck Studies, San Jose State University, is on display in the Salon Room of Cafe des Artistes at the rear of the Art Center at Fallbrook, 103 S. Main. Admission is free.

On March 14 and 21 at 7 p.m. in Cafe des Artistes, Jim Hall, chairman of the Community Read, will lead a discussion on the life of this complex and talented writer beginning with his boyhood in the Salinas Valley, his marriage to Carol, and his writing failures and successes, culminating in his work on “The Grapes of Wrath.” The second session will begin with “The Grapes of Wrath” and follow Steinbeck through two additional marriages, several books, his work as a foreign correspondent, his receipt of the Nobel Prize, and his final years. Seating is limited; call (760) 728-3350 for reservations.

Visit the photo display or one of several Steinbeck-related art exhibits throughout the community. Currently on display at the Fallbrook Library is an exhibit of “Steinbeck Country,” landscape paintings by the late Dorothy Finley, and coming in mid-March, the “Monday Plein-Air Painters” will be featured at Fallbrook Fine Art Gallery and Pinnell
