Detective: ‘The McStay case will never be a cold case’ – Endless man-hours continue in search for missing family

To say that endless man-hours have been spent looking for the McStays – the family of four who disappeared seemingly without a trace from their Fallbrook home in February 2010 – would merely scratch the surface of the amount of time, energy and resources that has gone into searching for them.

Joseph McStay, 40, Summer McStay, 43, and sons Gianni, 4, and Joseph “Joey,” 3, had moved to the Lake Rancho Viejo community on the Fallbrook/Bonsall boundary in November 2009, and were reported missing on February 4, 2010 by Michael McStay, Joseph’s brother, approximately two weeks from when they had last been seen.

On February 8, 2010, detectives examined the Mc Stay family’s 1996 Isuzu Trooper that had been discovered in an impound lot about four hours after they were believed to be seen on a video surveillance tape crossing into Mexico.

According to San Diego County Sheriff’s detective Troy DuGal, who has been heading up the case for the past 10 months, every lead and tip that could possibly point to the discovery of the family’s whereabouts has been carefully investigated.

“This missing persons case is open and active, and will remain mine for as ling as my career exists or until we find the family,” said DuGal. “It wouldn’t make sense for this case to become a cold case, and it will remain so until we have found the location of the entire family. All four must be found, and we are still hoping for a good outcome.”

Several theories of what may have happened to the young family have played through the minds of investigators.

“From the initial investigation, our biggest fear was that the family had been abducted,” said DuGal. “We obtained a search warrant to either substantiate or alleviate that concern with physical evidence. Now, we know that they were not abducted in a vehicle, or physically abducted, but that does not rule out verbal abduction, in which someone told them they needed to be somewhere, fast.”

DuGal also stated that the possibility of the family simply choosing to abandon their home has been looked at as well.

“We have looked at financial records, Summer’s bank accounts, Joseph and Summer’s joint account, and Joseph’s business account,” said DuGal, who also said email and cell phone accounts have been completely inactive since the family’s disappearance. “All the accounts have been red-flagged and none of them have been touched since February 4. Prior to the family going missing, the account’s activity had been normal. There had been no major withdrawals or [an indication that they were] putting money under a pillow for a vacation.”

Because the family’s finances have been red-flagged, the mortgage on the McStay family home has not been paid since March 2010, but it is not formally in the foreclosure process yet.

“When the finances were frozen, the ‘auto-pay’ on the mortgage also stopped,” said DuGal. “It is protocol to free the account of missing persons.”

According to Michael McStay, who lives in San Clemente, as of Monday, the home had not had a formal foreclosure notice posted on it.

Since the disappearance of his brother and family, Michael has been working hard to not only spread the word of their disappearance, but has shared tips that the public has brought forward with investigators.

“Two days within [Joseph’s] disappearance, my friend was able to help me develop, which was a way to help people know what was going on with the case,” said Michael. “With a literal click of a button, people can download missing flier PDFs in English or Spanish, or drop a tip to an email account set up specifically for that reason. I oversee the site, and keep information available to the public and law enforcement.”

According to both Michael and DuGal, the website has allowed detectives to investigate tips on an almost immediate level.

In October, the website received a tip about a family that looked like the McStays.

“We got a lead in Ensenada about a family, and within an hour and 15 minutes, the Mexican police had gone and questioned the family, who ended up being from Canada,” said Michael. “People got into the field very quickly.”

According to DuGal, the tip had reported a family of four on a sailboat in Ensenada that generally resembled the family.

“The police took a flier of the missing family with them to investigate, just in case Joseph and Summer had changed their names, but they were satisfied that the family was not the McStays,” he stated. “Still, that tip was very good because it was very specific.”

However, not every tip is as useful.

“We get some very vague tips, such as people saying they think they saw a family that resembled the McStays two to ten days ago at a certain location,” said DuGal. “To put that tip to rest, I have to hope the business has 24-hour video footage and then review 10 days’ worth of footage. Even then, it’s just impossible to work with that because the family could have been seen 11 or 12 days ago, as opposed to the 10 days ago.”

Though no solid information has come in for months, Susan Blake, Joseph’s mother, who lives in Corona, stated that her entire family will continue to hold onto hope that their family members will be found.

“We will always have hope,” said Blake. “Some days are hard, some are not, but you try to get involved and make an effort to help find them. I try to stay busy to help, but at the very beginning, it was absolutely devastating. Still, we are fighting, and not giving up. We are going to find those grandbabies and bring them home, whatever it takes.”

Blake has become very involved working with Spanish news outlets to continue to spread the word of her missing family.

“I am currently working with Spanish radio stations on the Baja California peninsula and I place a monthly flier in several newspapers in the peninsula,” said Blake. “It has become my full time job. I try to connect with charter boats and fishermen, newspapers, TV shows and now, radio personnel.”

Michael and Blake, while working hard to do their part to find their family, wish there was more that they could do to help investigators.

“We would love to have a private investigation firm offer its support to DuGal and his team,” said Michael. “We know that as part of San Diego’s homicide division, they have other cases to work on, and if we could afford to hire an investigator, we would.”

Other family members, while not as entrenched as Michael and Blake, have actively followed the investigation, waiting to hear each new detail reported.

“My dad and great aunt, who are out of Houston, were devastated,” said Michael. “We have a small family, and half of it has been missing. [My father’s] communication has been very good with law enforcement.”

“Mr. McStay communicates with me quite a bit,” said DuGal. “He doesn’t get to see local reports, so he depends on the family and me to get updates. Summer’s sister is also very involved and is constantly communicating with me. Summer’s mother has been torn up pretty badly by this, and has difficulty communicating with anyone. She just doesn’t want to talk about it, but wants her family back. There is nothing suspicious about her emotions; she just cannot handle it.”

For DuGal, the missing McStays have become a top priority.

“Since I started working in homicide two years ago, no other case has taken up more time than this one,” said DuGal. “This case has taken more time and man-hours than any other in my career. I also have three direct partners who I have tasked with interviews and investigating other search warrants. They have spent a considerable amount of time investigating the case. Outside of the Sheriff’s office, the FBI and Department of Justice have become invested, as have Immigration and Customs and the Mexican Federal Police. There is no simple way to answer how many man-hours have been spent on this case.”

There is also no simple way to explain how the family of four disappeared into thin air.

“That’s the mystery,” explained DuGal. “In my whole career, I have never seen anything like this. Usually when something bad happens, there’s a trail left behind. There is a witness or someone who has come forward. If the family had picked up and left Fallbrook, there would also be signs. But the case remains between both extremes, with neither side satisfied.

There is no trail supporting evidence of foul play, DuGal said. Telephone calls within a month of the McStays’ disappearance have all been identified. In summary, calls had been made to family members, business partners, and hair salons. Du Gal said none of the individuals he has interviewed that had been speaking to the McStay’s made him suspicious.

“Now we are just waiting for tips,” he said.

Both DuGal and Michael believe that information regarding the family’s whereabouts from Feb. 4 to Feb. 8 would be crucial to helping find the family.

“Those four days are huge,” said Michael. “To have no phones, money, anything… I don’t see it. The family in the footage had no suitcases, and just a purse at the border crossing. It was a cold night. If that was my family, they had no ‘do-over’ money or big, black bag.”

“If we are going to believe that the family crossed the international border on Feb. 8, we have to think that it is probable that someone saw the McStays before they crossed,” said DuGal. “We know for a fact that their vehicle did not cross the border, and that the family did not use their credit cards, cell phone, or accounts. After checking multiple times with various agencies, we are also 100 percent certain that the family is not in protective custody. So, where are they?”

On Monday and Tuesday (January 3 and 4), the family’s disappearance received national attention. Investigation Discovery’s “Disappeared” featured a one-hour program on the disappearance, and all involved in the case are hoping for the best.

“People have been emailing us if they have not seen an update on our website, and are really showing us that America does have a heart,” said Michael. “Even in this tough time, we receive emails from families saying they are still wondering, still praying. We’ve gotten a lot of love and support that way, and we feel fortunate that in such a dark moment, we have a great lead detective and friends to keep us strong.”

weird deal, have to find the person that lured them to mexico…

he scored something big and ran…or tried to go smooth things out……

hope we read there doing fine deep in mexico at there new taco shop…

  9. Iggy   January 9, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I would stay focused on Summer and you should dig and dig into her background. Is her name really Summer???

  10. Diana   January 9, 2011 at 6:39 pm

Dewy – I agree about staying focused on Summer. Not just b/c she’d had (several) aliases; but other things about her as well, that just don’t sit right… Perhaps she &/or Joseph planned all this out; & search results of their computer are suspicious. Albeit their (known) bank accts were untapped – they could’ve had other monies at their disposal. Something about this just feels shady; I hope the innocent kids are ok…

  11. anonymous   January 10, 2011 at 9:36 am

Thank you Diana. I hope that Dewy will pursue this angle.Who knows they may have traveled all the way down to South America.

  12. mom of lots   January 10, 2011 at 2:59 pm

I agree that the primary focus should be on Summer- she has changed her name many times and lied to her mother in law about her age (who did not know her real age until her disappearance). She also does not seem to have anyone real close to her (other than her mother) that has come out concerned (seems she may have not been real close to anyone). Her husband has had his brother, his best friend and business associates all come out concerned and looking for him. Also, googling was done on their computer days before their disappearance on getting children over the border (what they would require to have them cross the border). Their car was left at the border. Hello?! All this evidence thus far leads me to believe that she or both of them conspired to leave on their own recognizance.

  13. anonymous   January 12, 2011 at 4:11 pm

I too agree The Focus Should be On The wife Summer She Has Changed Her Name So Much. She Also Didn’t Want To Ever Go To Mexico And Here We have Learned That Someone In The House Looked It up. Maybe She Is running From Someone And They Found Her so They Had To Get Away. But It Doesn’t Explain The 4 days They Were Gone Before The Car Was Left. Where Were They All That Time. Everyone Has Secerts. I Do believe That Video Is Them Going Into Mexico And I believe They Had Money set Aside For this. I Think You Should At Least Let Your Mother Know Your ok.

  14. Anonymous2   January 14, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Yeah right we should put all our focus on Summer because she lied about her age. I’m sure she’s the only woman who’s ever done that. LOL

  15. whoknows   January 15, 2011 at 8:58 am

got to dig deep on this one. there is something here .
need to look deep in to the toys-his business partners.-his last projet-Mexico,Summer’s-job last home shown -what ,
what ever happen mr mcstay did not what or have time tell his family members. forced to go or harm would come to him & his family.
the red kitchen toys set. where did it come from.when did they pick it up.
    did they pay cash.

  16. Mike   January 17, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I just watched Discovery’s Dissapeared on this case and I listened intently to everything said by everyone. Nothing adds up at this point. If they were forced to go to Mexico why? Is one or more members of the family in danger? I know people on here want to focus on Summer and maybe she is the link to the case but maybe not. Who knows. I am as baffled about this as anyone. I feel Joseph was more grounded by family and business and it seems he was certainly less likely to vanish. In the video, of the unknown family crossing the border, I noticed the guy walking to the right of the family, the one the child seemed to look directly at. If that is the Mcstay family then the stocky guy walking next to the family appears to stay in step with them. But the motive remains a mystery. But I can assure you there is a motive. I feel Joseph Mcstay would not have left a profitable business, 100,000 dollars in the bank, and just dissapear. Something is wrong. The problem is that no one has discovered what that something is. No rational person leaves a bank account full of money. So though this case, currently, is a complete mystery there is a motive and I think that motive is something more than the family just wanting to dissapear. The investigation, thus far, reveals no reason why the family would want to dissapear. In other words there seems to be no criminal charges, no financial problems, nothing that has been found that would indicate the family is running from something. Totally baffling but my hope is that it won’t be long before all the answers will be found. My hope is that the family is alive. I just don’t know though. Were I the police I would canvas all the chain stores where those toys could have been bought and see if there is video of the family purchasing those toys and see if the same stocky guy is with the family in that video. In the discovery channel episode they could not identify the exact store but I would go to all of them calling the company headquarters making sure no video tapes were erased until the store was questioned by the police. It might take a year to do it but it can be done. May God bring a postive outcome to this story though I certainly have doubts. Good Day.

  17. Sandra   January 17, 2011 at 11:36 pm

The fact that they had those newly purchased toys seems the weirdest to me. If they had to flee and were just using the cash that they had on them, you would think they would try to conserve it. That makes me think that Mike may be right in that somebody made them buy the toys to make things seem normal OR they were going to Mexico for some sketchy reason but maybe thought they were coming back, but something happened to them while they were in Mexico.

Another weird thing to me is the google searches about the requirements for getting to Mexico, yet Summer seemed completely normal and they left in such a hurry. This makes me think that Joseph knew something was going on and only told Summer about it that night and they had to leave immediately.

This story is driving me nuts; on all those mystery shows, there is usually a conclusion, or the crime has been solved since the program aired. I came on here to find out the answer, but there just isn’t one. If I’m just some random person and I’m so upset about it, I can only imagine how the family is feeling.

  18. ???   January 19, 2011 at 12:49 pm

I really dnt understand….as I assume most people dont, of course there is something going on we don’t know about. And we want to know! Now either the mcstays. Let me refrase that joey and "summer". Let’s leave the children alone they have no power or say in what is going on or happend. They didn’t leave to start a new life. They left to get away from something whether that be problems or people. I really doubt the waiter story at the resturaunt could possibly a pay off from mike m. To throw off the familys where abouts. Out of room will comment againg soon

  19. ?   January 19, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Did mike m pay off the waiter to conceal the familys whereabouts and throw off the feds? Just thought to help break away the ice that is icrusting this familys missings. Did this occur from past issues involving her many aliases? Was the buisness partener who hasn’t came forward know anything? A lot of pressumtions. Few answers. Rarley do u google something and can’t find everthing about it. It is a mystery for me and to others but at least one too two people know something about this.

  20. ???   January 19, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Did any body notice the man to the right in the video at one second him the child look at each other and that man was also carring a hand bag along with joeseph and summer. Another comment to help put all possibiltes out there for people and the family

  21. MW   January 19, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Joseph’s Mom said he hadn’t been feeling well for months — maybe he was being poisoned? Can you tell that from hair this long after the fact?

  22. Mike   January 20, 2011 at 10:51 pm

As I said before I don’t know what’s going on with the Mcstay family. But lets look at the facts. No one has asked for ransom. None of their money, in the bank, has been touched. No credit card has been used. If it were a kidnapping what was the reason? According to the news there are no marital problems, financial problems or legal problems. Accoding to reports neither the husband or wife would harm each other nor does either one appear to be having an affair. So if all the above is true what does that leave? A random act of violence. But random acts of violence tend to be messy and leave all sorts of clues. Also their appears to be evidence that the Mcstays planned this and something occured to speed it up. I too noticed the man to the right that the child looked at but I don’t know what to make of it. There is one last possibility though I think it’s remote. Perhaps they kidnapped the Mcstays not for money but for the kids. I don’t think thats likely but if it is the case it bodes well for the kids but not for the adults. I stick to my original thought on this. Something is going on that we don’t know about. Perhaps the police and family know or perhaps they don’t but something is not right. All evidence, regardless of how many conspiracies we all come up with, point to the Mcstays leaving of their own free will and leaving in a hurry. Why? I just don’t know. But I know one thing. No one has a squeeky clean life. Not me, not you, and not the Mcstays. All this perfection they are trying to make us believe is not real. Many of use would run away if we could but we take responsiblity and stick it out. So there is something rotten in denmark we just don’t know what it is. Good Day,

  23. Scott   January 24, 2011 at 3:57 am

Since there are so many people wrapped up in this case online, dissecting every facet of the story in so many different ways, I feel like any information thats being withheld without really good reason should be volunteered to the public regardless of how irrelevant it might seem. I mean for example the neighbor’s security video showing the SUV leaving the driveway. Michael McStay or the police or whoever may be "positive" it’s them in the Isuzu, but who knows what some random person might spot. Maybe thats a bad example, how about results from fingerprint analysis’ etc? Were they able to get good prints from the steering wheel or the toys? Were they inconclusive? This seems to me like something that probably is or should be known (maybe I’m overlooking something?). If they could say for sure that it WAS the Mcstays that drove that car to the strip mall on the 8th, that would at least narrow down a lot of online speculation. Moral of the story: I feel like there are little tidbits here and there (Joseph’s illness, context of last phone call to buisness partner) that could wind up being valuble clues when they’re picked apart by thousands of people online.
My personal opinion… I suppose I’m of the mind that Summer’s past and frequent name changes are tied into it somehow. I do believe thats the family on the surveillence footage at the border. Really what are the odds of another family crossing in to mexico, just after the car was parked near the border, featuring a taller, dark haired woman, dressed like Summer always does with 2 appropriately aged children who always wear beanies? Joseph Mcstay’s mother points out the hair or lack thereof on the male figure but I think that has to with the back lighting and camara resolution and the transparency of hair. IDK, I’m as stumped, concerned and intruiged as anyone. I say release more about Summer’s past and what else they may have found in the computer’s internet history. Someone online somewhere is bound to see something in a novel way or pick up on somehting the family/police/FBI may have missed.

  24. Derek   February 1, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Saw this on Nancy Grace. This is very strange. It wasn’t like there was an accident, with stuff like eggs being left out on the counters and the dogs being left without a lot of water. People don’t just leave all that money. And if someone kidnapped them, what for? Usually a kidnapping is for money, yet money remains untouched and cards unused. More internet searches should be released, maybe it would help people figure it out. They [or one of them] did e-mail about Mexico and getting kids passports for Mexico on according to Nancy Grace show. They also said Summer told friends she would never want to vacation in Mexico. Maybe that was on purpose to throw people off? She or him or both of them asked about Mexico. Very strange. Nobody is perfect and you never know what happens behind closed doors, so that needs to be kept in mind as well.

Also, question, what about Cell Phones? I know that both phones went dead, but where was the last spot the cells "pinged" from and were they found? I hope the family finds answers and that everyone is alright.

  25. Lisa   February 2, 2011 at 1:03 am

Why wouldn’t they take their vehicle to Mexico? Wouldn’t that be a more comfortable and faster way to get to their destination especially if it was just to be a day trip? Also, how could they declare Chapter 7 in 2004, be evicted from a rental in 2009, and yet afford to be able to buy a big beautiful house? I wonder if the dad got involved with the drug trade. Is it possible someone took the wife and kids across the border to force him to do something he really didn’t want to do? Maybe cash was to be stored inside the toys on the way in, but he tried to get help on the US side for his abducted family and got killed. Also, it really bugs me that the wife’s mother is silent. I don’t think it’s because she can’t deal. She knows a few things she isn’t sharing. Her daughter’s constant name changing shoud be a start the discussion with her.

  26. Sandy   February 4, 2011 at 10:46 am

Still praying for their safe return

  27. bobd   February 6, 2011 at 3:18 am

This may be a little far fetched, but from all I read, Summer should definitely be looked at. Not for criminal background…but for connections with the intelligence community.. or the witness protection program. People do not disappear like this without a trace without help from trained professionals.

  28. jamie   February 6, 2011 at 11:19 am

Maybe "Summer" was having an affair. It could be her and the kids with an unknown man. Maybe something happened to Joseph, and Summer left. She was obviously looking into going to Mexico before they disappeared. This would also explain the money trail. If she is with a new man, he is providing.

  29. betsy   February 7, 2011 at 12:32 am

I am so sad and puzzled by this. I will keep this family in my prayers and keep my eyes open. God bless those little boys, how sad.

  30. joe   February 7, 2011 at 12:18 pm

You cant release all information. Thats bad police work. The goal of law enforcement is to find these people safely, if possible, or to bring justice to the family if bringing them home safely is not possible. I read this case, from the perspective of a retired law enforcement officer, and it baffles me. It seems they left willingly but took nothing with them leading one to believe that they planned to return. They shopped and bought toys before they dissapeared. It was late at night when they dissapeared. They left suddenly after a phone call. Who called them? At this point it’s impossible to know wheather the Mcstays are missing on purpose or wheather one or all of the Mcstays are victims of foul play. Based on what’s been released no one can no for sure what happened. All we can do is prey for the safety of them all, especially those children. Good Day, Joe.

  31. joe   February 7, 2011 at 12:20 pm

The word prey is a typoe and a badly timed typo! My appologies it should read Pray. We all need to Pray for the Mcstays. May God bring them home safely.

  32. Gene   February 19, 2011 at 9:26 pm

For some reason this story has touched me more than any other. Just saw it today on the ID network. Like someone else said, these stories are "supposed" to end with at least some kind of resolution. The sad thing is that many times on stories like this it seems to drag up all kinds of stuff that families would usually not want the world to know about their backgrounds, but if the worst thing about this family is that Summer changed her name a couple of times, man….. Lord just keep them in your care!

  33. PpBre   February 20, 2011 at 2:16 am

I just watched the episode on "Dissapeared" and my husband and I were debating this case. Yes there are alot of very valid points and I am very upset I didnt notice this "guy" the child looked at but I havent heard anyone talk aboutthe possibility that they are in witness protection. Why would the U.S. Marshalls tell alocal detective that they were in protection becuae who would really know who they were hiding from and they would be in witness protection for a reason so I am not completely ruling that out!! I do wish the family alot of luck in there finding out though, I would be devestated would I be in this situation.

  34. Curious Coincidence?   February 20, 2011 at 10:42 am

I understand that Michael is preparing to adopt two young orphans from Ghana this summer. I wonder if they are the approximate age of Gianni and Joseph and if the younger of the two will have a birthmark (or scar) on his forehead?

  35. Claire Swazey   February 20, 2011 at 10:54 am

I cannot believe they’d deliberately plan to leave for a long time or to leave permanently. If they’d wanted to do that, they’d have taken money with them, even if they’d decided not to use credit or debit cards. My understanding is that there was over 100k in their bank accounts, verified after their disappearance.

I hope that this mystery is solved. My heart goes out to their famiies.

  36. Jamie D.   February 20, 2011 at 10:54 am

Jamie’s comment above intrigued me. I watch quite a bit of ID and other similar shows. I think keeping an open mind and investigating "all" possibilities is important. I wonder if hiring a person with clairvoyance has been explored. I have a gut feeling answers will come. It’s just a matter of time. Bless the family.

  37. Sunny378   February 20, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I’m a former investigative reporter, and this case has red flags all over the place for me. First up, take the time to read this: The author makes intriguing points, and reaches an interesting conclusion. I’m not on the same page as he is with all his points, but the concept of Michael McStay coming into millions of dollars in drug money is not far-fetched to us who live in Arizona (or other border states). I wish it were as simple as they were told to "move now", they did so, and are somewhere safe. But my gut tells me something else.

Theory 1: It’s certainly possible that the targets were the children. With their hispanic heritage, they’d make perfect "entries" into a Mexican pedophelia ring. Michael met with two men at a soccer game to discuss the purchase of Spanish language tapes advertised on Craigslist. Maybe that’s where the kids were spotted. But that would mean the parents were disposed of before the so-called "family of four" was spotted walking across the border – and it would explain why look-alike parents were used to escort the children into Mexico. (Remember the family saying they "looked" or "walked" similarly – but not exactly?) It would also explain why the fingerprints on the map (left in the Baja California restaurant) belonged to adults other than those of the parents.

Theory 2: If Michael had indeed found drug money, though, that could explain why the family could walk away – knowing they had enough money to live on for a very long time. Equuisearch noted clothing was missing. Maybe the family shipped clothing and money ahead of their flight? If so, and if that is the family walking into Mexico, my gut tells me they fled to Colombia, not into Mexico (Summer’s heritage is Colombian, not Mexican).

Theory 3: Or, finally, maybe the man at the right in the video is escorting the family into Mexico where supposedly they might be being taken to "return the drug money", with the understanding that if they did so, they would be free to walk away. Of course we all know there’s no way that would happen.

And one last thing: Adults need only ID to get into Mexico; kids need nothing. It’s upon their return to the U.S. that passports or other ID is required.

  38. Sherry   February 21, 2011 at 10:29 am

I have viewed the video of the (supposed) family crossing the border several times and it suddenly hit me as I looked very close that the child holding the man’s hand appears to move his right arm across his body to the left as though he is trying to break the handhold. It also appears that as he’s doing that he turns back toward the woman and other child as if he were trying to get back to them. You have to watch closely as it tends to fade out as they keep moving toward the gate.
It became clear to me that the man may not be Joseph.
    Just my thoughts.

  39. Roxy   March 3, 2011 at 8:43 am

First of all my prayers are with the family .now im shock about this info about summer lying about her age honestly she has something to do with it I mean come on she was always changing her name thats very suspicious why was she always doing this I wonder what summer mom has to say I think.she had a past with someone and where there cameras where they
left the car cause all the parkings over there have cameras just curious I think she took took them over there shes hiding them and if she is shame on her cause someone is going to reconize her

  40. Sunny378   March 10, 2011 at 10:18 pm

I have just one other thought … what if the Isuzu the neighbors’ camera caught leaving their driveway didn’t contain the McStay family? What if the family had been taken away earlier (either by choice or by force) and the driver had returned either to leave food for the dogs, to stage a scene, or to retrieve things from the house? That would cast a whole different light on things … no?

  41. Sammy   March 14, 2011 at 10:14 pm

If the Feds and detectives say they have put endless hrs in this puzzling case then why havent they said anything about fingerprints or any strange hair. If all the blood and sweat has been shed then why havent they shown any proof! I would have gone through everything they own with the finest tooth comb and their garbage traced for any wierd DNA!!! Why didnt they show any closeups on the couple walkin to the border?!! And i have to hand it to them on" there’s nothin wrong with changing your name".! Well, anybody in their right mind would know that is not normal and it was more than once that she(summer) did change her name. I’m 51 yrs. old and this is the first for me. Maybe she was in deep crap for some reason noone knows about. I’m also a mother of four and also agrandmother of four gorgeous grandchildren, i can only imagine the hurt their family is experiencing from this. God Please be with them this time of trial and bring this this sweet family home safe. AMEN!!

  42. sheila   March 14, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Hi! Did anyone find it strange the red kid’s stove was found covered with a sheet in the back of their Isuzu and isn’t it also strange to have $100k in the bank and drive a $4000.00 truck that is 13 years old?

  43. [email protected]   March 15, 2011 at 5:28 am

i think they found valuables in there new house. they were afraid the former house owner would demand there return.theyused the 4days to convert all to cash which they could use in mexico and not need any former posessions.

  44. Sunny378   March 18, 2011 at 8:53 am

@ Sheila (Comment#42): Interesting thought. I wonder if that stove (or anything else that might have been back there) might have been large enough to hold (conceal) another person … an adult male, maybe? That wasn’t Joseph?

  45. Sunny378   March 20, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I just watched this story again on "Disappeared, Investigation I.D.", and something keeps bothering me. The family has lived in the house for three months, and yet their furniture is still in storage. Why? My husband and I moved here last year and, even though I have been doing some "renovating" during the past year, our furniture beat us here. If a family is planning to remain and live in a newly purchased house, does it make sense that three months later they still haven’t retrieved their furniture from storage?

  46. Tamara   March 20, 2011 at 3:11 pm

I just saw the story on I.D Dissappeared and just wanted to send my condolences to the family…. and also wanted to know did the police think to check the utensils also to see if the DNA matched and or did they only check the map?

  47. Tammy   March 20, 2011 at 3:18 pm

I watched this on Disappeared as well and I do not believe that Summer or Joseph planned any of this, it seems to me that someone took them, made them leave, someone spotted the kids in Baja, the finger prints on the map were not that of Summer and Joseph…Perhaps the childeren were wanted, not the parents…hate to think of it but the parents may have been killed when no longer needed and the kids sold to new parents…the youngest child has a distinctive birth mark that was recognozed…i think its a shame that alot of you are thinking that it would be Summer, just because she has changed her name, that was explained and No One has said anything bad about her! This is just hrorrible and I can not stop thinking about them!

  48. anonymous   April 25, 2011 at 7:47 pm

It is surprising that she would change her name, shouldn’t the police see if there is anything in the Border crossing at that time with her maiden name? Also it is possible that the grandparents of Summer wanted the kids and wanted to see them, the grandparents could’ve come up with this elaborate scheme to get them to come to Mexico. It is very probable that Summer could’ve come up with a plan and told her husband that if he didn’t cooperate then she would do something to the kids. I just want to know why she would change her name is it to not be associated with anyone from Mexico…. I guess I just have so many questions, dig into Summer’s Background ya know try to find things out about her like did she want to sell the kids because in Mexico you can sell children and never find them again they can be trafficked across borders, and sold into child pornography. Children can bring a better price and are more disposable than people think. I hope they are found safe and sound, but if they have been trafficked they may never find them again.

  49. matt   April 26, 2011 at 9:37 pm

Where can I see one of the shows??????

  50. Cindy   May 11, 2011 at 8:39 pm

I happen to think that someone did want the kids and made sure the parents didn’t say anything and kept hush and normal. These people probably told them to meet in Mexico and killed the parents and kept the kids alive in Mexico for some sick reasons.

  51. stephen   June 1, 2011 at 6:00 am

I got a email from Joseph Mc. Stay on 6/10 asking for a estimate for some repairs for a elderly woman in gainesville florida, just to find out my hourly rate. then i got a email from randy miner saying he was not going to pay for my services for a fountain i installed at a cancer center because my rate was lower in the email sent to Joseph Mc stay. I had three men working for a week installing a fountain that was built in five min.
dose anybody know a connection between the two men or is it the same person?I am out $ from fountains of living waters

  52. Marie G   June 1, 2011 at 4:50 pm

I know mutual friends who know the Mcstay and Blake family. From day one I had a very strong premonition about this case and have been continuely bombarded by this therory. The police should be looking at the wife Summer as the suspect in this case. Joseph was not the man who crossed the boarder with summer and the children. Summer left with an unknown person or persons that night. I feel Summer is a person who has led a very secretive life. She met someone who is providing her with a new indentity and has helped her achive this. Someone she is personely involved with and has the money to take her into a new life. This why no money’s were touched in the bank accounts. She wanted to dissapper with her children. She knew joseph would never allow her to leave with his children. Joseph would never hurt his mother and brother like this by dissapering unless he could not prevent this physically from happening. Family and friends should be looking heavely in Mexico for just the children and mother. You will confuse the public by showing pictures of Joseph as one of the four. I will continue to pray for the children and family of Joseph to be reunited and bring the people responsable for this to justice.

  53. ????   June 4, 2011 at 1:07 pm

I can’t believe a family with a great life and a good amount of money would just… POOF, gone! But maybe they had been planing it for years made a sperrate bank account and shipped furniture over to Mexico. Then they waited years and years to just unexpectedly leave. Or they could have done it for fame so then 10 20 years later they would meraculously return and make up some dramatic story all Just to be famous. Anyone thing of that?

  54. ?????????   June 14, 2011 at 2:31 am

do you think its possible that the mexican drug cartel had anything to do with their disappearance. its very sad and strange. is it possible that someone was affliliated with them or had a drug debt that was unsettled. i hope this is the least of what could have happened esp for the sake of the kids my prayers go out to the family. also the wife summer is quite a mystery. i havent seen lots of family concern for her esp her own

  55. Derek S   June 14, 2011 at 7:58 am

I wonder if the authorities have looked into the backgrounds of the previous owners of the McStays new home as some have pondered that valuables may have been found in the home.

  56. Kim   June 24, 2011 at 5:19 pm

I watched the video of the family going to look at their potent new home in Fallbrook. Summer is very nasty in this video, hurling nasty comments at her husband the entire time. It is very clear that she did not want to live there! She has had several name changes and obviously wanted to live by the beach, as she makes this crystal clear in the video. I believe she is an unstable person and if her husband messed her her master plan for her life, I believe she would have to eliminate him to make sure she lived the life she wanted. I believe she killed her husband and took off across the border with another man and her kids. That would back up the fact that the fingerprints did not match Joseph’s on the map that was left in the restaurant in Tijuana.. I don’t believe that Joseph McStay would have voluntarily left his home or his teenage son. He was feeling sick in the months prior to their disappearance, she could have been poisoning him.

  57. Redman   June 29, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Someone went to a lot of touble placing the vehicle at the shopping center next to the border with the plastic toys that were purchased at another location. Also, the man seen walking with the family was probably not Joseph. His mother pointed out that his long hair would have been protruding out the side and back of the cap. Ths was either drug involvement, witness protection or the wife is responsible for the disappearance and Joe’s demise.

  58. leita   July 3, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Hopefully for some reason they are in witness protection. They literally disappeared without a trace.

  59. Debi   August 6, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Remember the case of New Jersey couple David and Bruna Goldman? Bruna took a 2 week vacation to Brazil (her native country) with their son and never returned. David was interviewed and said he didn’t see this coming. He went to court and battled for years to get his son back even after she married another guy and later died during childbirth.
I think it was Summer and another man taking the kids over the border to Mexico and then eventually to Columbia. She wanted to leave with the kids and not have Joseph sue her for child abduction. There was a four day gap between their disappearance and police finding the car. Something might have happened to Joseph. I hope I’m wrong.

  60. anonymous   September 30, 2011 at 11:04 am

I could be totally wrong about this, but it sounds like maybe the wife and kids went to kids went to Mexico to live and Joseph was kidnapped-possibly by someone who know a business partner who owed or loaned some money and is being controled and being made to work in some sort of bad market because someone saw that he had potential or was a hard-worker. He could be anywhere.

  61. SAD DAY   October 6, 2011 at 3:03 pm

My heart goes out to the Mcstay family i pray everything is up and well with then. Think positive thoghts and hope one day God will bring you all back together. Peace an blessings.

  62. Concerned   October 10, 2011 at 7:39 am

This is a real mystery. However there maybe some clues that might explain why they had suddenly took off like that. Did the detectives checked the phone records? Maybe they received a phone call or visitor that prompt them to leave? The toys in the car might provide some clues. The featured documentary said the Ross store was unable to provide who or when the toys were purchased. Surely they should be able to show the time period of the family shopping in the store, no? The food bowls left behind on the chairs tell me the kids were there when they suddenly left for no apparent reasons. Did the detectives interviewed the person who was looking after the dogs? Maybe he can provide some clues to their disappearance, no?
For every mystery there is always a key to unlock and solve it. The trick is to find it.

  63. Praying for the McStay's   November 1, 2011 at 1:45 am

Something that strikes me as odd is the fact that phone records indicate Mr. McStay’s last phone call was made to his business partner the evening of the 4th and it only lasted 1 minute. According to the business partner, during this 1 minute phone call they discussed a meeting from earlier that day. Such a short discussion would indicate to me they were possibly planning to meet and confirming time, location, etc. The neighbor’s camera puts them leaving home at 7:47 pm, and phone call to business partner was made at 8:28pm which means they were likely in the vehicle at the time of the phone call.

Cell phone records indicate pings on both McStay’s phones from the same location near a densely overgrown area of the San Luis Rey River, 7 miles from their home. Over the next two days, friends and coworkers sent text messages
which also pings to the same tower from two days earlier.

    Praying for the families.

  64. Judith Sumner   November 4, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Here is a possibility to consider,
What if Summer had a lover and gets rid of her husband and with her children cross over to Mexico with the new lover
That will explain everything. Including the fact that Mr McStay’s mother identified Summer and the kids but could not recognize her own son
Summer is a person that likes fresh changes and names
I really hope I am wrong but nothing else makes sense.
Think about it. Mr McStay is going about his life whilst his wife is planning to learn another language
Perhaps on that fateful day Summer got Joseph to drive them all to some destination and possibly his demise

  65. vivien H   November 8, 2011 at 3:58 am

My heart goes out to your family. I am at a loss to understand how a gorgeous family of four can just vanish without a trace. It is with my heavy heart that since viewing this in Australia on the Discovery Channel, that I can’t sleep or eat so I cannot even begin to imagine what you are all feeling. I am a single mother of two children and I know if this was to happen to either of my children I don’t know how I would go on. You would count every second, everyminute of everyday. You just keep alive with the memories and pray to god at night as you cry that they will just all walk through that door. So many questions, who what when and why but nothing. I pray to God every day, every night that they will return to you safely so you can all return to life as normal. God bless you all and may God keep them all safe and out of harms way xxxooo

  66. help from clairvoyant   November 8, 2011 at 4:04 am

Have the family thought about getting any information from a clairvoyant that police investigators may use to find missing people?????

  67. Ann from Belgium   December 9, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Oh i just have seen the sad and strange story about the missing family on tv on a channel about I.D Investigations here in Belgium. I am really choqued and also would love to help but nobody can. I wonder if the family or friends already contacted some clearvoyants or psychics ,the ones who work from time to time together with the police ,i saw this in other programmes ,when they have a picture of the missing persons they sometimes can feel things . It ‘s worth to give it a try . I am sending my deepest thoughts and blessings to alll te family and friends and i will send The reconnective healing to them all .
God bless in love and light .

  68. b. from Canada   December 11, 2011 at 12:06 pm

I agree with the people who suggest Summer got rid of Joey. Joey complained that he wasn’t feeling well….why??? More important did Summer complain to anyone about Joey’s health? If she didn’t, I wonder why? Also, it is so easy to hide a small car for 4 days. In a garage? In a semi trailer? And why would Joey leave his asthma meds. in the car???

  69. Karen in North Carolina   December 15, 2011 at 9:36 pm

I just watched the program on this missing family with Laura Ling, I hope that if they are alive and choose to leave on their own free will they will contact their family to put the anguish they have in their hearts to rest, if they met with foul play, I hope that some way some sort of closure will find its way to this family. My thoughts and prayers go with the Mcstay family.

  70. psychic abnormality   December 19, 2011 at 4:25 pm

I am of the distinct feeling that mr mcstay was being hurt in someway with no knowledge of what was happening to him and that his wife was involved.I cannot xplain why i feel this so deeply.I believe the clues will be in spotting of the children, the birthmark may have been removed and hair cuts, but i also think that with all the publicity this case has,one day we will get a closure,i just sick at the possible outcome for Joeys family.Look to the hairs left by him and analyze them, with the full scope of possible chemical threats, and analyze the food items, medicine left behind.Behind most doors are people no one ever really knows, and for some the heart is as black as the ocean depths.

  71. Tiffany   December 19, 2011 at 4:34 pm

My thoughts an prayer are with the family hoping for a safe return seen the case on e-investigates and has been on my mind all day been searching internet for answers

  72. Sue   December 27, 2011 at 5:11 pm

I think Summer had plans to start a new life. Poor Joey…she took the kids and went to Mexico. she lied about her age so like the mom said, who knows what elses she has lied about. Joey seem to be from a close knitted family, no way he wouldnt have told his brother or close friend. You always confide in someone. So I dont think he knew what was happening. I hope this is solved soon.

  73. Christy in Buda   January 6, 2012 at 6:02 pm

When you go through all the facts as presented, and start by putting a big red "X" on things that "don’t make sense" you end up going back to the point where the cell phones last pinged, and the idea that they voluntarily left home. If you just stop there, everything else adds up. So, after removing the exotic theories that are unsupported, you end up with pings on a bridge, then nothing. No account activity on phones or money. Everything about their lives up to this point is "making sense". The area nearest the bridge has not been searched (it is dense and lots of foliage). That would seem to be the best place to look and go for "makes sense" up to that point. Chasing everything after that point seems fruitless. Chasing everything before that point seems reasonable. Did a family leave to run to the store for something, or maybe fast food, and things fell apart, or do you think there are better odds that this is a one of a kind rare case involving mysteries, intrigues, special hidden accounts, intentional abduction, and worse.

I say, start with the bridge and pings. Go back to the beginning to the last thing that "makes sense" to the universe in general. That is where you will find them.

  74. tt   January 6, 2012 at 6:30 pm

They should contact a psychic …….I wish for the best

  75. Jamie from TN   January 11, 2012 at 7:59 am

I am so sorry about the loss or disappearance of this family. I saw the special on the E! channel a few nights ago and this was the first I’d heard of this case. I am so saddened and haunted by this and cannot quit thinking about the family and what happened to them. I have several theories, which are probably close to the same of some other people’s theories. I hope that they just up and left by their own free will – which is still odd! I just wonder why they couldn’t contact any one and let them know. I hope that they were abducted or harmed in any way. I just hope they are OK and not deceased. I hope the children are taken care of and well! Good luck in your search and I hope that they come home soon or are found. I have been praying daily. May God be with this family and keep them safe!

  76. Saddened   January 19, 2012 at 9:21 pm

I think maybe since Joey’s health was deteriorating, he decided to go somewhere where people would not feel sorry for him and he could live in happiness. I see no other reason for them to just up and leave unless they were running from something or someone. The reasons for not taking their money or for not contacting their family only they know. I really hope they are okay especially the babies.

  77. Perplexed   January 24, 2012 at 7:36 pm

This is the absolute best article I have seen written on this case. You’ve explained much, and were careful not to leave the reader confused (like most of the articles I’ve read). I just hope and pray that this family is found safe and sound.

  78. Mihaela   January 27, 2012 at 2:59 am

I think she wanted a fresh start without Joseph. She ran with the kids and another man…maybe she poisoned her husband and killed him in the end. He doesnt seem the type of man who would leave his friends and family behind and just ran…i think the primary focus should be on Summer…And i dont think she is in Mexico, just because she crossed the border doesnt mean she lives there.

  79. haley   February 27, 2012 at 9:22 am

I’m confused on why everyone assumes that Summer had another man. Why couldn’t Joseph have had a mystery woman? Or maybe its the two of them in the video. Maybe its not even them.

  80. Jimmy   March 4, 2012 at 9:12 am

they didnt take money out of thier account which means they had money elsewhere. Probably drug money and drug issues. They not in Mex. Somewhere else very low key.

  81. Rudy   March 12, 2012 at 6:05 pm

And I wrote this but could not post it on webseluthes , can you tell me your opinion?

My take after many , many hours of research.

FIRST OFF – Believe none of what you hear , and 1/2 of what you see….

  82. checho   April 16, 2012 at 8:25 pm

i hope they are ok i really hope they are

  83. James   April 21, 2012 at 7:20 pm

My opinion is they are dead. I believe something or someone made them leave their home at 7:30 at night & they met with foul play very soon after. Perhaps they went to meet someone from craigslist to buy furniture? I think it was meant to be a short trip & then return home. The person or persons responsible are mexican and returned there using the Mcstays vehicle. In that video or other footage around that date before the car was found there is probably footage of the person or persons responsible entering Mexico. They are most likely to be found close to home..possibly nearer the cell phone tower that last pinged their phones.

  84. Patricia   April 23, 2012 at 5:13 pm

So sad! What a beautiful family. I just wish someone come forward and tell the family of what is going on. Them kids are so innocent! God bless the McStay, and Summer’s family members. Thoughts and prayers are with you both sides of family.

  85. Jonathan   May 26, 2012 at 6:10 pm

Usually where there is smoke, there is fire. However this case as well as the missing Jamison Family from Oklahoma are both truely frightening to me.
I believe that Sommer and the kids walked into Mexico, I also have an idea that the toys were perhaps bought to make the kids happy and calm them down (perhaps so they would stop asking about "wheres daddy wheres daddy" and that sort of thing).

I think the most logical explaination is that Sommer wanted to take her kids and start a new life but she had to "dispose" of Joe first.
However the witness protection idea is very likely as well, and so is the idea of them leaving to escape something or start over.
If someone really did spot them in Mexico eating at a resturant, then I’m certain it was the Mcstay children. How many children fitting that exact description, with the same birthmark, would be seen in that area. But it could’ve been a decoy to throw people off and make people think they are alive.
I just know one cold hard fact of this case and the Jamison case and that is the grainey surveillance video of Mcstays (supposedly them) walking across the border after dark, and the video surveillance of the Jamison’s (and perhaps another unknown male) loading their truck the day they left….. both are truely frightening and bizarre and honestly make me think the world isn’t half as nice as people believe.

  86. Mr vice   July 18, 2012 at 5:13 pm

This case is extremely weird. I hope they are found if they haven’t already. But my opinion is that no business owner right now (especially of fountains) would have 100k in the bank. The economy is horrible and this man is trying to make you believe that he makes this much money off a fountain business. My guess is he was involved and trafficking and no longer served the cartel. Cartels are good to make you "disappear" without a trace. Summer is very shady as well. But I would look more towards Joseph.

  87. Ryan   November 19, 2012 at 9:20 am

I really don’t understand why the area around the Bonsall Bridge WAS NOT searched!!?? This make absolutely no sense. Summer’s phone pinged off the tower near the Bonsall bridge on February 4th, 5th and 6th before it died. It has never been found. I am tempted to travel to southern California and search the area myself!

  88. Katiy   February 2, 2013 at 10:36 pm

I think that there is a lot of information, that is been held back from the public so it makes it hard for the public to really know what happen other then to form so many different story’s because we don’t have all the facts only what they want to tell us,how do we know they had a 100k in bank account where is a copy of it.
Release more information for the public !

  89. jeff   November 17, 2013 at 9:14 pm

$100,000 in cash in a bank is nothing in contracting, and it’s also not unusual for contractors to be simultaneously in debt to several other people while having that cash. You always need to access to cash to make any construction oriented job run smoothly because it is expensive and unpredictable.

  90. mb   November 18, 2013 at 10:25 pm

from a psychic in march 2010 who mediated in front of, and inside the mcstay family home :

    Mcstay Family
There are some cases Im more drawn to than others. This family has had my attention from the start.
I don’t get an over all good vibe when I think of them. I started the meditation at their home. I see a man, he is walking down the street to their home, he was dropped off at the farthest corner from their home. Huge palm tree to the right of him as he walks by and mountain scene in the background. You can almost see the main road (boulevard) from behind him. He is heavy set, heavy at the waist area, was once in fantastic shape. I feel he played football in school. Blue faded jeans, work boots. I hear the word GARDNER, and wonder if that was his job. He seems to be caucasian. Beige shirt, button down, short sleeved. He rings the bell, he knows them, they know him. The kids are happy to see him. The dogs go outside, allergies to the dogs. I feel Summer met him first. Summer has set up a business deal. I hear talk of renovations, kitchen counters and bathrooms. Marble. Sudden aggression. Gun pulled out on family. Joseph tries to keep peace as Summer freaks out. I feel thats why they left so easy, doors lock automatically when closed

  91. Mari78   November 21, 2013 at 9:52 am

I always leaned towards idea that the McSatys headed into Mexico to escape something/start a new life but always had concerns about leaving the dogs out unfed and the food items out in the kitchen (someone forced them out). Now that we know that wasn

  92. kky8   December 3, 2013 at 11:59 pm

I’d run away if I thought my kid’s lives were in danger. Maybe Joey & Summer wanted to leave because they knew something bad was going to happen. That being the reason for the Mexico & Spanish language searches on the computer. Only they didn’t leave quick enough?

Now that the bodies of the ENTIRE family have been found in shallow graves most of you people have been exposed for what you are – raving lunatics. You have proven yourselves incompetent to even exist. Do the rest of us a favor and DO NOT VOTE – DO NOT BREED.

In my opinion, Summer McStay’s sister TRACY has more information about the disappearance and murders than she has shared.

To explain my last post (see above)

I question who had access to the McStay’s home computer? Quite possibly the Spanish language search, etc. was done by someone other than Mr. and Mrs. McStay. (I believe it was someone visiting the family at some point)

JEALOUSY is a powerful motive. I believe whole heartedly that Summer’s sister Tracy should be brought in to take a polygraph if she hasn’t already. After watching “Disappeared – Mystery at the Border, McStay Family” (time stamps of 34:22-34:45 and 36:32-36:50). For example, I would be crying my eyes out if my sister and her family went missing. “Million dollar home” would be the last thing out of my mouth.
