Driver plows into bicyclist, killing him

MENIFEE - A motorist suspected of fatally injuring a bicyclist on a Menifee road was released on his own recognizance, jail records show.

Luis Aranda Llamas, 23, of San Jacinto was allegedly behind the wheel of an Acura that struck 55-year-old Matthew Carp of Menifee from behind around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday on Domenigoni Parkway, just east of Lindenberger Road.

Carp had been riding eastbound, alongside a friend, in a marked bike lane, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The Acura was allegedly traveling well above the speed limit when it collided with the victim's bicycle, causing him to strike his head on the pavement, according to a sheriff's statement.

Carp was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics less than 15 minutes later. The other bicyclist narrowly missed being hit, according to sheriff's officials.

Llamas was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and driving a car with a fictitious license plate. He was booked into the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta but released a few hours later.

Sheriff's investigators are expected to submit the case to the District Attorney's Office for review in the coming weeks.
