“It didn’t rain on our parade,” said Roy Costello, chairman of the Fallbrook Christmas Parade. “The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has not been cancelled due to weather since 1971, and was the inspiration to carry on this Christmas parade, no matter what.”
The parade, in its 32nd year, ran one hour compared to its usual two-hour length and featured about 60 percent of the scheduled entries, with plenty of variety to make it a good composite. Although the spectator crowd was a bit lighter as well due to the cold weather, and a bit more bundled up to brave the elements, plenty of excitement was apparent.
“Yes, it was chilly, but not for some of the participants and spectators who decided that this community tradition was not worth giving up,” said Costello. “There were entrants who decided not to brave the elements, but just as many decided to give it a go. Marching bands still marched and elaborate floats built by local churches and youth groups still made the procession down Main Street.” The rain ceased at about 3:45 p.m. that day and didn’t return until about 15 minutes after the parade had concluded.
Despite the weather conditions, several members of the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club provided vehicles for dignitaries in the parade. The only change was, in many cases, convertibles were switched out for hard-top classics.
Costello said his large team of volunteers came through with dedication and gathered right on schedule to launch the parade – rain or shine.
“The Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce is grateful for the local sponsors that donated funds for this event,” said Costello, who also encouraged residents to “be sure and ‘shop small businesses’ this Christmas season, right here in the Fallbrook community.”
