Fallbrook Hospice volunteers honored

FALLBROOK — Fallbrook Hospice celebrated its Hospice Volunteers on January 20 with a luncheon. They were honored and thanked for the wonderful service they give to the many Fallbrook area individuals (and their families) who have life-limiting illness.

Hospice Director Pat Smorzewski, RN, knows that the hospice volunteer plays an important role in the care delivered by Hospice. “They are truly a group that makes a big difference in the lives of others,” says Pat. “The time a volunteer spends with a patient may be a time of companionship, respite for the family, assistance with errands or chores around the house and, most importantly, the gift of support and time.”

Hospice volunteer Dorothy Bobitch said that in 1994 her stepfather was diagnosed with cancer and that his greatest fear was that he would end his days not in his home. His physician referred them to Hospice. “When the Hospice Team entered our lives, I knew that I would be able to give him his wish to die at home.” This experience convinced Dorothy that she wanted to be part of a Hospice Team. “When I retired in 1999, I participated in the necessary training to become a hospice volunteer. I believe the greatest gift we can give someone we love is a peaceful and loving final life’s journey,” says Dorothy. “I consider it an honor and a privilege to be allowed to share this event with the loving families I have met through Hospice. These courageous people are truly an inspiration.”
