Fatal collision claims life of Oceanside man in three-car accident on State Route 76 east of Gird Road in Fallbrook

FALLBROOK – This morning, Feb. 27, at approximately 6:53 a.m., a 36-year-old male from Oceanside was driving his 2000 Kia Sephia eastbound on SR-76 east of Gird.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Kia Sephia was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed and lost control in a curve. The driver attempted to regain control, but clipped a 2008 Nissan Altima traveling westbound driven by a 48-year-old male from Temecula, who was not injured.

After clipping the Nissan, the Kia continued sideways in the westbound lane and was broadsided on the passenger side by a 2003 Mercury Sable driven by a 42-year-old male from Temecula and his male passenger who has yet to be identified. Some witnesses at the scene said the man was traveling with his teenage son as a passenger. The driver of the Mercury and his passenger suffered minor to moderate injuries and were transported to Palomar Hospital trauma center.

The 36-year-old male from Oceanside who was driving the 2000 Kia Sephia was extracted from his vehicle by people who stopped to help and give CPR. Despite all efforts from these good Samaritans, he was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department personnel.

SR-76 had one way traffic control in place for several hours due to the investigation. It is not known at this time if alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision. At the time of the crash the roadway was wet and there was light rain in the area.

This collision remains under investigation.
