FUHSD transfers Gird Road property to Bonsall - 49-acre site may be traded eventually

The Fallbrook Unified High School District (FUHSD) board of trustees approved a resolution April 28 that would allow for the district’s Gird Road property to be transferred to the Bonsall Unified School District (BUSD).

In January, the FUHSD board had approved a memorandum of understanding relating to the Bonsall school district unification. The terms of the memorandum include financial terms and a division of assets under the education code, including the transfer of 49 acres of property on Gird Road. In 2011, the Gird Road property was valued at $2 million. No direct costs are related to this action by the board.

“The board approved the transfer <at the May board meeting>, so we are completing the paperwork for the to occur,” said FUHSD superintendent Dale Mitchell. “Bonsall will decide what they will do with that property.”

When asked if the Gird Road property would become the site of Bonsall’s new high school, BUSD superintendent Justin Cunningham stated that there were many considerations still to be made before announcing a definitive high school location.

Cunningham stated that the Bonsall High School location would be built with the future Palomar College satellite campus on the northeast section State Route 76 and Interstate 15 intersection in mind.

“We want to build the location as close to the new campus as possible,” he said. “It will allow for students to have better access to public transportation.”

Currently, the Bonsall district is considering various options regarding the Gird Road property, said Cunningham.

“The Gird Road property is in a nice neighborhood,” said Cunningham. “We could talk to developers about options, including trading the property for another that would better fit our needs.”

Cunningham stated that some developers have shown interested in the Gird property. As development and discussions continue, the Bonsall Union High School will be housed in Sullivan Middle School. As the high school expands, Cunningham believes that the Sullivan location will develop to meet those needs until the new high school is built. By that time, the middle school will have grown to meet the high school’s growth as well.

“We will use a new teaching model that is different from most high schools,” said Cunningham.
