High school district announces three finalists out of 28 applicants for superintendent position

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Union High School District board of trustees has announced its finalists for the position of superintendent. Three candidates will be further interviewed for the position. They are:

*Mr. Mark Davalos, Scappoose, Oregon

*Mr. Gregory Mizel, Escondido, Calif.

*Dr. Hugo Pedroza, Lompoc, Calif.

Interviews are scheduled to be conducted the week of August 18. According to district officials, numerous stakeholders will have the opportunity to meet the final candidates and submit input to the board about each of them.

Fallbrook Union High School District retained the services of California School Board Association’s representative, McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C. to assist in conducting its search.

The consultants reviewed, screened, and conducted extensive background checks on 28 applicants.

On August 12, the consultants presented the applicants to the board of trustees and provided detailed background information on each applicant. The board selected three finalists.

    If there is no one qualified in the Fallbrook district to become superintendent then the board has not been doing their job. Getting someone from outside can be a disaster and often expensive if they later decide they made a mistake.

    Re: #1. Or it just might be that no one in-house wants the job. It’s not exactly the dream position for an educator.

    To Har – your comment is ridiculous on many levels. To believe that a qualified candidate should only come from within a district – and a small district with limited administrators at that – is absurd. A district can greatly benefit by bringing in someone from the outside with fresh ideas and a wide range of experience. A Board has nothing to do with ensuring that internal administrators/staff qualify for, or aspire to, the position of Superintendent.

    The superintendents job is not a dream job? Then why were there 28 applicants? School is in session for 188 days, most working people would call that a part time job. And yes I know the superintendent is expected to be in his office during school recess but I also know that is rarely the case. The pay is excessive and retirement benefits are also excessive with lifetime medical. If a candidate is groomed within the district you know what you are getting, you can never be sure what you are getting when you go outside but then the other pasture is always greener. Has the school district ever hired an administrator from the outside and later regretted it..YES! A good example of promoting from within was Mike Choate at the elementary district the district knew what they were getting, he had the support of the teachers and administration and was an outstanding superintendent.

    Har – The Superintendent’s work is year-round, not a teacher’s schedule. The Superintendent’s work year is 12 months/year. The Superintendent is involved in planning/overseeing district operations/improvements to the District property, overseeing the hiring of new teachers, etc. during the "school recess". Where are you getting your incorrect information? I would also be very interested to know who you would suggest that the Fallbrook High School Board promote to superintendent.

    Whom ever they hire, as long as they get rid of certain administrators, the High School will be way better off..We need someone from the outside to fix that messed up high school !!

And our current superintendent met those exact specifications so he must be great right? But then Me said… we need someone from the outside to fix that messed up high school !!

    So it sounds like we brought in someone from the outside and they messed things up this according to Me and now Pragmatist wants to once again gamble on bringing in someone from the outside rather than making an in house selection.
