Investigation into De Luz shooting continues; man sustains multiple gunshot wounds

Sheriff's authorities are reporting this morning, January 4, that an investigation is continuing into an incident that occurred yesterday in De Luz that left a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Sgt. Joe Montion said the incident took place on January 3 at about 12:50 p.m. near De Luz and Harris Roads.

"Fallbrook deputies responded to De Luz Canyon to investigate a traffic accident near De Luz Road and Harris Road, in Fallbrook," said Montion. "Initial reports were that a vehicle had run off the road and collided into a fence."

Montion said when deputies arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle unoccupied.

"While on scene, a witness came forward stating she came across a Hispanic male adult lying near the crash scene with apparent gunshot wounds," said Montion. "The witness drove the injured male to Fallbrook Hospital"

Montion said detectives responded to the hospital and "confirmed the victim had in fact sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was connected to the vehicle accident."

During the investigation, another witness who heard gunshots near the crash site also reported that her 1984 Chevy S-10 truck had been stolen, Montion said.

"This vehicle was located a short time later in Riverside County, near Sandia Creek Rd and had been set on fire," said Montion. "At this time detectives are not speculating if the two incidents are related."

A full investigation into the incident is underway.

Montion said the identity of the victim and the suspect has not been released pending further investigation by detectives.
