Menifee man accused of being under influence of marijuana in fatal crash pleads innocent to charges

VISTA - A Menifee man accused of being under the influence of marijuana when he caused a head-on crash that killed a 53-year-old Oceanside woman two days before Christmas pleaded not guilty today, Dec. 31, to misdemeanor charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana.

Jonathon David Roberts, 22, remains free on $100,000 bail. He was ordered not to drive while the case was pending.

Roberts was in a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup headed west on State Route 76 when he drifted into the path of eastbound traffic near Monserate Hill Rd. in Bonsall around 3:20 p.m. Dec. 23, according to California Highway Patrol

Officer Jim Bettencourt.

According to the CHP, the defendant's pickup crashed head on into a 2010 Honda Fit being driven by a 53-year-old Oceanside woman, identified as Socorro Aguirre-Reynosa.

Aguirre-Reynosa died at the scene, and three passengers in the vehicle she was driving -- a man, a 13-year-old boy and a 30-year-old woman -- suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified the passengers as Aguirre-Reynosa's husband, daughter and grandson. All three were taken to Palomar Medical Center.

A 2004 BMW 328i heading east directly behind the Honda Fit also was involved in the accident, going down an embankment, leaving the Carlsbad woman behind the wheel with moderate injuries, Bettencourt said.

The woman was taken to Palomar Medical Center, along with Roberts, who suffered minor injuries.

"A large amount of marijuana was found inside Mr. Roberts vehicle, and it is believed that during the time of the collision, he was driving under the influence (of drugs),'' Bettencourt said. "Chemical test results are pending.''

A witness said that in the moments leading up to the crash, Roberts was crossing over a double-yellow line and swerving "all over the road,'' according to Bettencourt.

A judge ordered Roberts to return to court Jan. 17 for a readiness conference and Feb. 11 for trial.

The defendant faces up to a year in jail if convicted, authorities said.

A 53-year-old Oceanside woman who was killed in a head-on crash on State Route 76 Sunday, December 23, has been identified as Socorro Aguirre-Reynosa by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office.

Reynosa was driving a Honda Fit on the state highway, with her husband, 30-year-old daughter, and 13-year-old grandson as passengers that day about 3:22 p.m. near Monserate Hill Road when a pick-up truck crossed over the center line and collided with her vehicle. Reynosa sustained multiple blunt force injuries of the head, torso, and extremities in the incident.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), who is leading the investigation into the crash reported that 22-year-old Jonathon Roberts of Menifee was responsible for the collision. Roberts, who was found to have a large quantity of marijuana in his vehicle in addition to reportedly being under the influence, was arrested after being treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

"Roberts was driving his 1997 Dodge Ram truck westbound on SR-76 near Monserate Hill," said Jim Bettencourt, public information officer for the CHP.

"According to a witness who was driving directly behind him, Mr. Roberts was crossing over the double yellow line and swerving all over the road," said Bettencourt. "At one point he turned his vehicle to the right before violently turning it back to the left and crossing over into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane."

Bettencourt said the action caused Roberts' vehicle to collide head on into Reynosa's vehicle.

In addition, a 2004 BMW 328i that was traveling directly behind Reynosa's Honda Fit on eastbound SR76 was also involved in the collision.

"This vehicle went off the south side of the roadway down an embankment," said Bettencourt. "The driver, a female from Carlsbad, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Palomar Hospital."

Roberts was reportedly charged with vehicular manslaughter, possession of marijuana, and being under the influence of marijuana. Other charges may be added depending on the outcome of the investigation.

The California Highway Patrol has said the driver that caused a fatal three-car collision on State Route 76 at about 3:22 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, has been identified as 22-year-old Jonathon Roberts of Menifee.

"Roberts was driving his 1997 Dodge Ram truck westbound on SR-76 near Monserate Hill," said Bettencourt.

"According to a witness who was driving directly behind him, Mr. Roberts was crossing over the double yellow line and swerving all over the road," said Bettencourt. "At one point he turned his vehicle to the right before violently turning it back to the left and crossing over into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane."

Bettencourt said the action "caused Mr. Roberts vehicle to collide head on into a 2010 Honda Fit traveling eastbound on SR-76 driven by a 53-year-old female from Oceanside and her three passengers."

Her passengers included an adult male sitting in the right front seat, a 13-year-old boy in the rear seat, and a 30-year-old female in the rear seat.

"All passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to Palomar Hospital," said Bettencourt. "The 53-year-old female driver died on scene," said Bettencourt. "It is believed that the passengers were related to the driver."

Bettencourt said that a 2004 BMW 328I that was traveling directly behind the Honda Fit on eastbound SR76 was also involved in this collision.

"This vehicle went off the south side of the roadway down an embankment," said Bettencourt. "The driver, a female from Carlsbad, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Palomar Hospital."

"A large amount of marijuana was found inside Mr. Roberts vehicle and it is believed that during the time of the collision he was driving under the influence (of drugs); chemical test results are pending," said Bettencourt.

Bettencourt said Roberts sustained minor injuries from this collision and was transported to Palomar Hospital.

"When released, he will be booked into Vista Detention Facility where he will be charged with suspicion of driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter and possession of marijuana. Several other charges may follow depending on the outcome of the investigation."

The collision remains under investigation.
