Mother-in-law arrested in murder of Fallbrook man; victim now identified as Geoward Flores Eustaquio, 53

A woman was arrested in connection with the murder of her son-in-law in Fallbrook on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Cynthia Katherine Cdebaca, 63, was taken into custody and has been charged with the murder of Geoward Flores Eustaquio, 53. Cdebaca lived with her daughter, Laura Salinas, and Eustaquio and the couple's teenage children at their Fallbrook home.

"The motive is still under investigation," said Homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

Neighbors called 911 about 8 a.m. that morning to report multiple gunshots being fired at the couple's residence at 602 Braemar Terrace, inside the Peppertree Park housing development off South Mission Road.

"We received lots of phone calls from neighbors and our deputies responded right away," said Jan Caldwell, public information officer for the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept.

"The gunfire was still taking place while one caller was on the phone," said Giannantonio.

In addition to manpower on the ground, deputies utilized the ASTREA helicopter above the crime scene until they could determine if a suspect was in the immediate area.

"Our deputies were able to look in the windows and see a male inside the home," said Caldwell. "They made entry, with the intentions of it being a recovery (injury), but once they were inside they realized the victim had already passed away from his injuries."

Deputies immediately began to clear the house and property in search of any other individuals, but no one else was found at the scene.

Area residents were reeling in shock from the sudden arrival of multiple law enforcement vehicles and personnel, and saddened at the news in this quiet neighborhood.

"We live on the same street <as the house where the homicide occurred> and my daughter, Jennifer, called me and said 'Mom, there are helicopters flying over our house and the police are outside with guns pointed at the house next door,'" said Diane Walkley. "The people that live there are such a nice family, they really are, we have such nice neighbors and this is a peaceful and quiet area."

As the homicide investigation ensued, Fallbrook Sheriff's detective assisted in gathering information from both neighbors and family members.

A search warrant was obtained in the late afternoon and crime scene personnel worked well into the night at the scene.

Giannantonio said in the early afternoon that information was leading toward one particular suspect and before midnight Cdebaca was taken into custody and charged with the crime.

While it is surmised that Eustaquio was killed as a result of a gunshot wound, the San Diego County Medical Examiner has not yet released the official cause of death.

UPDATE: Homicide lieutenant says crime scene investigators will work "well into the night" on Fallbrook case

Sheriff's Homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said this afternoon at a press conference that crime lab personnel and crime scene investigators will be "working well into the night" on a homicide that occurred at about 8 a.m. this morning. (Tues., Feb. 11) in Fallbrook.

Giannantonio reviewed what had occurred throughout the day and said it was doubtful any new or additional information would be known until tomorrow.

Authorities have said the Sheriff's Dept. received multiple calls from neighbors on Braemar Terrace in the Peppertree Park housing development off South Mission Road at about 8 a.m. reporting that gunshots were being heard from the home.

"The gunfire was still taking place while one caller was on the phone," said Giannantonio.

"We received lots of phone calls from neighbors and our deputies responded right away," said Jan Caldwell, public information officer for the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept.

The Sheriff's Dept. also launched the ASTREA helicopter over the area during the critical first hour of responding to the potentially dangerous scene.

As deputies started to examine the premises, they looked in the windows of the home.

"Our deputies were able to see a male inside the home," said Caldwell. "They made entry, with the intentions of it being a recovery (injury), but once they were inside they realized the victim had already passed away from his injuries."

Deputies immediately began to clear the house and property in search of any other individuals, but no one else was found at the scene.

"It appears that he was a gunshot victim, but it is early in the investigation yet, and the official cause of death has not been made official," said Giannantonio.

Giannantonio said as of 2 p.m., he was waiting on a search warrant to be able to begin a thorough homicide investigation inside the residence.

"Once the search warrant gets here, our crime lab personnel and homicide investigators will be working well into the night on this," he explained. "They will collect evidence and photograph the entire scene."

Fallbrook Sheriff's detectives are assisting in gathering information in the neighborhood.

"Fallbrook investigators have already interviewed several of the neighbors and family members," said Giannantonio.

From conversations in the surrounding neighborhood, it appears a potential suspect may have been identified.

"We do believe there is a suspect, but it's too early to release any information on that," he said. "I can tell you we are not actively searching for that suspect in this neighborhood; we believe the suspect has left this area."

While the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office will confirm the identity of the male victim in the near future, several neighbors said the home has been occupied by Gerardo and Laura Salinas and their teenage children. Area residents said they believed both adults were in the military reserves, in addition to having other occupations.

A woman who lives next door to the residence where the homicide occurred said she received a phone call from her daughter who was at home during the incident. "My daughter, Jennifer, called me and said, 'Mom, there are helicopters over our house and the police is outside with guns pointed at the house next door,'" said Diane Walkley. "I don't know what has happened, but there are a really nice family, they really are. We have such nice neighbors and our area is so peaceful and quiet."

Giannantonio said anyone with any information that may be pertinent to the homicide is encouraged to call Sheriff's Homicide Detail at (858) 974-2321 or after hours (858) 565-5200. It is possible to remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest - call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
