Pala man DUI crashes into motorcyclists on SR76; motorcycle driver loses leg, female passenger in life-threatening condition

A 36-year-old man from Pala was driving under the influence of a controlled substance law enforcement officials said when he crashed into a motorcyclist and passenger, causing the pair to sustain life-threatening injuries.

On Saturday, March 3, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Michael Inglett of Pala was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram eastbound on State Route 76 east of Couser Canyon Rd. at a stated speed of 65 to 85 mph, said California Highway Patrol spokesperson James Bettencourt.

"For an unknown reason, Mr. Inglett was looking in his rear view mirror and drifted into the westbound lane," said Bettencourt. "Upon entering the westbound lane, he collided into a 2001 Kawasaki Motorcycle driven by a 51-year-old male from San Diego and his 47-year-old female passenger from La Mesa."

Bettencourt said that as a result of the collision, both the male and female on the motorcycle suffered major injuries and were transported via ambulance to Palomar Hospital.

"The male driver of the motorcycle had his left leg amputated as a result of the crash and the females injuries are life threatening," he said.

"Upon further investigation the officers on scene determined that Mr. Inglett was under the influence of a controlled substance," said Bettencourt. "Mr. Inglett was arrested for Felony Driving Under The Influence and booked into Vista Detention Facility."

Bettencourt said further charges may be pending in this case.
