Sgt. John McBroom passes away; service to be held Thursday

The following obituary has been posted early to the Village News website because the service for this well-known citizen and former Sheriff's Dept. sergeant will take place the same day the newspaper is distributed.

John Morgan McBroom has been called up to his Heavenly Father at the age of 66. John passed away on Oct. 21, 2010 at 2:45 p.m. in Palomar Hospital, Escondido surrounded by his family. In his final hour he gave selflessly his permission to donate vital organs to save others. So far he has successfully given continued life to a liver recipient.

John graduated from James Monroe High School in Glendale, Calif. in 1962. Right after school he entered the Navy and a journey on the open seas. Serving his country for four years, he was stationed aboard the USS Bellatrix in Yokosuka, Japan. After his return from service, he attended Golden West College in Huntington Beach and worked for the California Department of Fish and Game for a few years.

After graduating from college with a degree in Public Administration, he began his career in law enforcement with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor patrol in 1971. He worked in Orange County for five years before being transferred to San Diego County. His first cases were in child abuse working throughout the county. He would achieve Detective rank in 1982 and worked in Fallbrook. His work in his home town went on for five years.

Being transferred to Vista Detention Facility in Jan. 1987, his experience would be called upon to train the new deputies in the jail system. After fifteen months working the jails and studying along with his long time friend Frank Adams, they would reach Sergeant in Feb. 1988 and be transferred back to Fallbrook. He went back and forth between Vista and Fallbrook.

He finally served out his career in Fallbrook before having to retire along with his partner Frank in 2003. They continued to work together on side jobs never leaving each other, a constant reminder of their devotion to each other through career and friendship.

He will be remembered as the “Sheriff of our Town,” a friend until the end, a veteran, a coach, a man with grace and love for his community, a brother, a pillar, as a Commander, and by us his children a Dad.

He is survived by his little sister Peggy Nyholt; his four children, Shawn Kelly McBroom, James Morgan McBroom, Jason Morgan McBroom, and Jessica Merrie Merrion; his eight grandchildren, Erin Blake, Robert James, Lydia Morgan, Jake Morgan, Josh Morgan, Chloe Dawn, Seraphim Nicolette, Rhea Ann; niece Holly Rae De Coir and husband Keith; nephew Chad Lansbury; his lovely fiancé Midge Thomas, who captured his heart, brought a twinkle to his eye and touched his gentle soul; and Midge’s wonderful children, Tony, Brian, Eric, and Beth; all of their spouses and all of Dad's closest friends.

Visitation will be held Wed., Oct. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary, 333 N. Vine St., Fallbrook. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ The King Lutheran Church, 1620 S. Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, followed by burial at the Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery with military honors.
