Supervisors vote to take bids for aging Don Dussault Park in Fallbrook

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted today to begin taking bids to replace an aging playground and other amenities in Don Dussault Park in the unincorporated community of Fallbrook.

The three-quarter-acre day use park on Alturas Street near W. Aviation Street was constructed in the mid-1990s and its original playground, drinking fountain, benches and concrete paths remain in use, according to county officials.

County officials have proposed demolishing those amenities and adding a children's play area, parking stall, drinking fountain, retaining walls, concrete walks and a picnic plaza that will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and offer ''improved recreational opportunities for community members of all ages.''

The board voted 3-0 to authorize staffers to advertise and award the construction contract, which was estimated at $197,000. An additional $53,000 was earmarked for related project costs, such as construction inspections and management, county officials said.

The $250,000 project will be funded through Community Development Block Grants.

County officials expect construction to get underway in late spring and be completed sometime this fall.

Also at this morning's meeting, the supervisors set April 16 for a public hearing and vote on the purchase of 114.03 acres for open space on Volcan Mountain near Julian. County officials said the land's appraised value is $194,000.
