Two fires now burning on Camp Pendleton

There are now two wildfires burning on Camp Pendleton, according to officials.

The wildland fire that began yesterday, April 18, at approximately 10:30 a.m. has now consumed approximately 425 acres but is close to being extinguished.

"That fire, which is in our Zulu Impact Area, is now 95 percent contained," said Lt. Ryan Finnegan, Base spokesman. "However, there is also a second fire burning."

Finnegan said the newer fire is smaller and no acreage numbers have been provided yet.

"It is further north of the first fire, but still in the central portion of the Base," he said. "There is no threat to our surrounding communities."

He also said no injuries or property damage have been sustained in either blaze.

"Our fire crews are working diligently to extinguish these fires," said Finnegan.

It has been reported that weapons drills sparked the blazes during training exercises.
