UPDATE: Medical Examiner says babies found dead, abandoned were twin sisters

(UPDATE, Mon. Jan. 5)

The San Diego County Medical Examiner (ME) has reported that the two fetuses found dead and abandoned in Fallbrook on Fri., Jan. 2 were "newborn" twin sisters.

According to the ME, the "infant" girls were attached to the same placenta and wrapped in a towel when they were discovered in the driveway of a residence across the street from St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook about 1:41 p.m. that day.

The ME said the deaths were confirmed at the scene "due to the lividity changes to the bodies."

The Sheriff's Dept. is handling the investigation into this case and seeking the identity of the babies' mother.

Authorities have confirmed that two fetuses were found dead and abandoned in the driveway of a home on the north side of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook on Friday, Jan. 2.

According to Sheriff's Homicide Lt. John Maryon, "On January 2, at about 1:41 p.m. a blanket was located along the side of the roadway in the 1700 block of Saint Peters Drive in Fallbrook. When the reporting party looked under the blanket they discovered what appeared to be two full-term fetuses."

"The reporting party then called the fire department and the Sheriff’s Department for assistance," he continued. "When the fire department arrived, they confirmed the fetuses were deceased. Deputies then requested detectives from the Homicide Detail to respond and handle the investigation."

Maryon said, "Detectives noticed the fetuses were actually fully-developed and were at least 20 weeks old or older. Each fetus had its own umbilical cord, which were both still attached to one placenta."

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office, Maryon stated.

"We are asking for the public’s assistance to help us identify the mother of the children," he said. "This would be someone who was recently pregnant and is no longer pregnant and does not have their babies to show after their birth."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Homicide Detail at (858) 974-2321 or after hours at (858) 565-5200. It is possible to remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
