UPDATE: Sheriff's detective recovers stolen flags

Sheriff's Detective Dan Laibach has recovered the three American flags that were stolen from light poles in downtown Fallbrook over the 4th of July.

"I was patrolling Main Ave. at about 2 a.m. on the morning of July 5 when I saw three juveniles (approx. age 17) walking down the street with the flags," said Laibach. "One was wearing a flag as a cape."

When the detective began pursuing the teens, they dropped the flags near Main and Fig and began to run.

"I wasn't able to apprehend the suspects, but I did recover the flags," Laibach said.

Laibach did not know who to return the flags to because no report had been filed at the time.

The detective called the Village News today (Tues., July 8) and found out that the VFW had reported the theft to the newspaper. He promptly delivered the flags to the newspaper office where the VFW could pick them up.

Three American Flags stolen, mounting hardware destroyed in downtown Fallbrook over 4th of July weekend, VFW reports

According to members of Fallbrook Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1924, over the 4th of July weekend, three American flags were stolen and the related mounting hardware destroyed on three posts in the downtown area. The flags are posted in the downtown area all along Main Ave. on street lamp posts for patriotic holidays and special occasions such as the 9/11 remembrance.

The VFW said someone desecrated the flags and "showed their disregard for our national symbol."

One member said, "Our Flag is a symbol for which countless people have paid with their lives, their bodies, and their psyches to secure our way of life. The perpetrators of this act, if found, should be required to work in the Wounded Warriors, or the VA Hospital wards to see the price paid by volunteers that protect this country, and our way of life, which is symbolized by this Flag."
