Authorities with the California Highway Patrol have reported that a woman was killed after losing control of her vehicle and colliding head on into a semi on State Route 76 Friday at approximately 12:20 p.m.

According to CHP public information officer Jim Bettencourt, the woman, who has not yet been identified, was traveling eastbound on SR 76 in a 2008 Honda Civic. According to witnesses, the woman was traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle causing it to spin counter clockwise into the westbound lane, Bettencourt said.

"At that time, a 2004 Freightliner big rig was being driven westbound on SR76 by a 38-year-old Vista man," said Bettencourt. "He was driving between 35 and 40 miles per hour when he saw the woman lose control of the Honda, but he could not stop in time to avoid the collision."

Bettencourt said the force of the crash caused the Honda to split in half from the engine compartment back. Emergency workers are continuing to try and separate the vehicles and remove the body of the woman from the wreckage.

"We do not have the identity or the age of the woman at this time," said Bettencourt. "The driver of the Freightliner did not appear to suffer any injuries, although he was very shaken up," said Bettencourt. "He is not expected to be charged in this incident."

Authorities have confirmed a fatal accident occurred around 12:20 p.m. today, Friday, January 25, on State Route 76 at Gird Road. Upon arrival, emergency responders issued a Sig Alert and the state highway has been closed in both directions until further notice.

The limited information available at this time from the California Highway Patrol shows that a head-on collision took place between a tan-colored Honda Civic and a semi truck. It appears the Honda may have been split in half in the collision; the majority of the vehicle was lodged under the semi.

A witness at the scene said in his opinion it looked like the deceased may have been a female, possibly in her 20's.

Officials are on scene performing an investigation and emergency workers are preparing to remove the vehicles from the roadway.
