Celebrating Highway 395 as a historic route

FALLBROOK — On Saturday, April 12, Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries was on hand at the intersection of South Mission Road and State Route 76 in Bonsall to cut a festive ribbon to honor a historic initiative in progress to designate parts of the old Highway 395 as Historic Route 395.

Signs along appropriate portions of local roadways have begun to appear, designating areas where the original 395 existed, thanks to the County of San Diego and Supervisor Bill Horn.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, classic cars paraded northbound on South Mission Road into downtown Fallbrook, where a special celebration was held by the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce.

The designation of Historic Route 395 is hoped to increase tourism in Fallbrook and has been a project of Fallbrook Chamber members Tom Casey and Bruce Dennett. This project is built around publicizing Fallbrook as a pastoral past of early California.

The Chamber is working on complementing the historic route with the prospective registration of as many as fifteen heritage buildings and sites, a process of which will hopefully include the official establishment of a historic district on Main Avenue.

The Chamber hopes to attract weekend day visitors by offering them an enjoyable road trip through Fallbrook’s rural hills and into the establishments of local retailers.
