Edward William Long

Edward William Long passed away on March 9, 2005. He was born on May 4, 1911, to Margaret and Roy Long in St. Louis, MO. He lived in Atchison, KS, during his elementary and secondary school years and attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, MO, and St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, KS.

On April 20, 1939, he married Mary Katherine Sheldon, who was the girl across the street. They built their first home in Burbank, CA, in that same year. A daughter, Sharon, was born and five years later another daughter, Helen.

Most of his working life he was as a salesman with Weston Biscuit Company, later followed by sales jobs for Cardinal Sales and La Victoria Mexican Food products. He also enjoyed part-time work as a real estate agent with Trotta Real Estate Company. In 1976 he retired and fulfilled a dream by moving permanently to San Clemente with his wife into a home they had built for them.

He was primarily a family man who participated in all areas of his daughters’ lives as they grew up. He was very proud of all his grandchildren and enjoyed being a special part of their lives. He loved sports and as a youth was active in many sports, including swimming, baseball, basketball, football and wrestling. As an adult he loved golf, both as a participant and as a spectator. He enjoyed a good sense of humor and made puns frequently, to the amusement of his family and friends.

He was a lifelong Methodist with a few years in between as a member of the Little White Chapel in Burbank, a Disciples of Christ church. During his retirement he was an active member of St. Andrews by the Sea United Methodist Church in San Clemente.

His wife of 47 years, Mary Katherine, and his sister, Bernadine Sullivan, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughters Sharon Siden (John), Sacramento, CA, and Helen Archibald (George), Fallbrook, CA; his grandchildren Scot Siden, Lissa Hubble, Katie Siden, Garcia & Kimberly Hubble Wood; and five great-grandchildren, Kyle, Owen, Delaney, Baylee, and Jillian.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews by the Sea United Methodist Church, 2001 Calle Frontera, San Clemente. A light luncheon reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Andrew’s by the Sea Foundation, in care of the church.
