Marie E. McCasland, age 75, went to be with our Lord on March 17, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with kidney disease. Born on September 6, 1941 in Ray, Ariz., she was the daughter of the late Dolores B. and Jose D. Vera.
Her family later moved to Southern California where she graduated from Sacred Heart of Mary High School in Montebello, Calif., and then went on to complete junior accountant classes at Sawyer Business School. In 1963, she married Ronald A. Martinez and had three daughters; Ruth Mercurio (Frank), Becky Lopez (Troy), Rachel Branson (Kevin).
As the years passed, she gathered more family from a marriage with Jack B. Smith and his children, Jim Vanbuskirk (Shannon), Carol Lynn Mack (Dave), and Debbie Sisson (Donald). With Jack, she gathered this large brood and moved to Fallbrook, Calif. where she fell in love with the small community and made it her home.
Marie worked as an office manager for many local businesses, including Southwest Irrigation, Straightline Construction and NPC Construction. She was extremely active with the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1924 where she served on the Ladies Auxiliary and made many dear and loving friendships.
In her later years, she found and married the love of her life and soul mate, Harold McCasland, and lived in De Luz with him. Together they created a warm and loving home where they shared their love of family and friends with all. She truly found peace, love and beauty there with Harold, and felt that was the most precious gift that they could give to one another and all they met.
Marie also leaves behind her dear sister Joanne Najar (Gilbert), and beloved brother Richard Vera; grandchildren Adam, Joshua, Cameron, Briann and Graham; the McCasland children, Kevin (Tina), Theresa Briglio (Larry), Linda McCasland, and many other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, step-family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother (Joseph) and previous husband Bob Bartz.
Marie was a very loving and giving person and believed that all people should be showed the kindness of family. She was a dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed.
Family will receive friends and say a rosary on Thursday, March 23, 4 to 8 p.m. at Berry-Bell and Hall Mortuary, 333 N.Vine St., Fallbrook. Church services will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 450 South Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook on Thursday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m. Donations may be made to the VFW Children’s Fund in lieu of flowers.
