Robert M. Sweeney

Robert M. Sweeney, beloved husband of Mary Louise (Klusmeier) Sweeney, went to be with his Savior on April 23, 2013. Mr. Sweeney was born in Alma, Mich. Nov. 15, 1918. He was preceded in death by his parents Myles and Elene Sweeney and brother, Patrick.

Upon completion of his studies at the University of Notre Dame he entered the Army Air Force as a second lieutenant and piloted a B24 bomber in combat during WW II. He flew combat missions over several different war theaters. During this time he was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal with two bronze oak leaves, and numerous campaign medals and ribbons.

After returning from the war he and his wife lived in South Bend, Ind. several years. They came to California where he was employed by Hughes Aircraft. He was director of foreign contracts. Mr. Sweeney worked for Hughes from 1951 to 1981. During his employment with Hughes, he helped grow the company from just a few contracts to a 660 million dollar enterprise with a work force of more than 11,000. Upon retirement, the Sweeneys moved from Pasadena to Fallbrook. During his career and upon retirement he and his wife traveled extensively in the United States and abroad.

Mr. Sweeney was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fallbrook. He and his wife were major benefactors for the pipe organ which was installed in the new church building.

Bob will be missed by his wife Mary Louise (Klusmeier) Sweeney of 71 years, family members and friends.

Arrangements were made by Berry-Bell & Hall of Fallbrook, Calif.

A celebration of life and mass will be held at St. Peters Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 8 at 8:30 a.m.
