Artillery support company raised my spirits

I was in World War II, 2nd Armed Division, 41 Armed Regiment FCO in 1944. We had a black artillery company that gave us artillery support every one in a while.

One day I was sitting in my fox hole, all alone, and I heard this black artillery company sing “Old Susanna” as the artillery came over my fox hole, giving (heck) to the enemy.

It made me realize I was not alone. I sang along with the artillery company. That made my day for me. I wanted to thank those great guys, a lot. It was great for me to hear them and I have never forgotten it.
