Fallbrook needs to be a friendlier village to pedestrians

On a walk south on Mission Road, I arrived at Stage Coach Lane and waited for the pedestrian light to change. By the time it did, a driver passed and blocked the crosswalk. When I pointed out his error, he apologized profusely. My last reading of the rules stated that a driver is supposed to stop behind the line and then, after looking both ways, proceed on a right turn.

After waiting another cycle of the lights, I crossed Stage Coach and went south on Winterhaven. The same thing happened there except it was a maintenance type pick-up. This time, I was louder about his error and he must have thought I asked his age because he held up one finger.

Crossing these intersections has been one of the biggest hazards of walking. It makes me even more worried because it is at the high school and children may not be as aware of these driver habits. The bush overgrowth on the northeast corner of Winterhaven and Mission doesn’t help either. Yesterday there was another close call at Winterhaven again. Neither cars nor pedestrians are visible from the corner.
