Re: "Obamacare will be popular" [Letter, Village News, 11/28/13]

Perhaps Obamacare will be popular... eventually. Both Medicare and Social Security had many detractors in their early days but are now regarded as successful.

I agree with Mr. Monday that there are elements of Obamacare which, taken one at a time, are very popular. At this juncture, there are two major problems that are poisoning the rollout of Obamacare: (1) because of bureaucratic mismanagement, it was put into operation way before it was ready or adequately tested, resulting in only 10 percent of the expected enrollment, and (2) President Obama repeatedly lied to the American people when he said “if you like your health plan, you can keep it.” Now, four million Americans have had their health insurance cancelled by companies which no longer offer their old policies – and never will, because they do not comply 100 percent with the requirements of Obamacare. By so doing, the President has severely damaged his ability to lead the nation on this issue. Can Obamacare recover in time for the 2014 health insurance market? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Mr. Monday is seemingly a self-appointed public cynic who can cherry-pick his facts to match his opinions. The fourth paragraph of his letter is not even a sentence, just a naming of segments of our economy he apparently does not like. Perhaps in his future postings, Mr. Monday can earn our respect by grounding his commentary in facts and by being more objective.
