RE: "Shouldn't sensible water practices be used?" (Letter, Village News, 2/26/15]

This is regarding the comment about why the Fallbrook Public Utility District, when it was flushing a fire hydrant, didn’t load the flushed water into a tanker truck and return it to the system.

While the practice of flushing water from the hydrant may appear wasteful, it is necessary at times due either to water quality concerns or to pipeline leaks that must be isolated for repair.

We make every effort to avoid flushing, but under certain circumstances, we have no choice but to discharge water from the system. When we must discharge this water, due to state laws related to drinking water system operations for protecting public health, we cannot put that water back in the system.

While water conservation is important, especially in the current drought, protecting public health and providing safe drinking water is our top priority.
