Slumlords take advantage of the elderly

Finding an apartment in Fallbrook, if you are elderly and disabled with medical concerns, is nearly impossible. It’s either an apartment in an overpriced senior facility or a place in one of those 55-and-up complexes (also overpriced).

I am 73 years old, disabled with lung disease and require constant care by my son, who gave up his career and devoted four years of his life to care for me. Most children today would just shove their parents into a nursing home and wait for their death. I congratulate my son for holding to family values and working 18 hours a day so I can have quality of life until I leave this world.

For the past three years, I have resided on Elbrook Drive in a rundown little dump ($1,050 per month) owned by a “slumlord.” He currently owns four rundown units on that street and two on the north end of town.

Because we complain the plumbing is bad, that the rooms flood when it rains and that other tenants are wife beaters and drug dealers, we are called “complainers” by our landlord and are being forced to move.

It seems our landlords would rather devote their time to their daycare center than making their properties a better place to live.

Since retiring from Palomar College because of medical issues, I live on Social Security and a small pension from the state and can’t afford to move.

I hope freeway underpasses have facilities for all my medical equipment.
