'Spanglish' is a must-see

This is to help open the eyes of our community in the hopes that we will see far enough ahead to go to see the movie “Spanglish” before it moves on and we lose the ability to see a picture about ourselves. This is a very cleverly written and directed movie that shouldn’t be overlooked, especially with our generations today. It is an outlandishly true picture of our society and should be a ‘must-do’ book report for the over-13 crowd. The movie has an enormous political message that is buried but still discernable and is well worth ferreting out. The effort would be tremendously revealing to educators how much their students could see in this comedy or just plainly and simply comprehend

You could put Shakespeare on hold for this. Without giving it all away, you should take your students to the movie. However, it is suggested you separate the genders; not that they can’t see it at the same time, but this is just for your own good. And it would be a good idea not to have the students’ parents as chaperones, either. Or, parents, break down and take your children to see it. That’s safer, yet.

There are some glaringly obvious circumstances, but don’t think you’ve seen them all until you get back in the classroom or your home and listen to the young people discuss what they saw.

This has about the same conversational value as Golding’s “Lord of the Flies;” of course, not with the same drama, but it would be an eye opener to listen to the discussion.

If you want my ‘Cliffs Notes’ for “Spanglish” call me [(760) 728-0227], but then you will know only what we saw. You have to do some of your own work before they will be released.
