Student of the Month

It has been my pleasure to be included in the Student of the Month program for the last four years representing the American Legion. The frosting on the cake is the thank you notes that we receive from the students.

The students receive gifts and certificates from politicians and local businesses and my part is to present them with a medal and a pen from the Legion. When I give them the pen, I ask if they are right-handed or left-handed; when they tell me which, I sort through my pens and get the right- or left-handed pen. We have received a lot of thank you notes, which has been real rewarding. One student wrote, “I promised that I would write and I’m keeping my word.” Another student wrote, “I’m writing this thank you note with my right-handed pen.” Another student wrote, “I want to thank the Legion and all of the people of our community for taking an interest in the young people of our community, and someday I want to be like you and give something of myself to my community and country.”

At the last program, a man showed me a medal that he had received in 1958 that was from the Legion when he was a Student of the Month. How can you not be proud of our students, when all you see on TV is young people involved with drugs, crime and theft?
