Escondido: Habitat for Humanity starts energy-efficient housing development

Construction on an 11-home, energy-efficient development to be built by Habitat for Humanity and Sempra Energy over the next year and a half got underway today in Escondido.

The planned 1,300-square-foot homes on Elm Street will feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Construction of the houses is expected to be complete by September 2015, according to Habitat for Humanity, which said one of the homes will be occupied by a wounded veteran and his or her family, as part of its "Building for the Brave'' program.

"Habitat's programs are in place to help those who need a 'hand up' to overcome the challenges that they face with regard to decent, affordable housing,'' Habitat Executive Director Lori Holt Pfeiler said. "With Habitat's 'Building for the Brave' and community revitalization initiatives, we are working with community partners to offer hope, transform families and make home ownership a reality for many people in need in San Diego County.''

Volunteers with Sempra, the corporate owner of San Diego Gas & Electric and the Southern California Gas Co., put up the frame on the first house. They also plan to perform energy upgrades and exterior repairs at about 35 homes in the surrounding neighborhood in June.

Habitat for Humanity said Sempra has contributed around $200,000 toward the project.

"This is Sempra Energy's first project with Habitat for Humanity and we are all very enthusiastic about the opportunity to build a home for a wounded veteran and to help revitalize the local community,'' Sempra CEO Debra Reed said.
