Thieves slog it out at Hemet Golf Club las Tuesday

“I played as much golf as I could in North Dakota, but summer up there is pretty short. It usually falls on Tuesday.” – Mike Morley

So what’s a little drizzle compared to the long, cold winters that drive golfers in other parts of the country indoors for months at a time?

On Oct. 21, the Third Thursday Thieves, undaunted, dodged the raindrops at Hemet Golf Club and completed their round a little damp but certainly in good spirits.

The tournament format for the day was “two-man better, ball-blind draw.”

It’s sort of like having an unknown partner somewhere out there on the course who you hope is having a better day than you. The competition was pretty tight as you will see below.

• First place, Dan Young and Mike Williams – net 63

• Second place, Jackie Del Castillo and Wil Stelts – net 64

• Third place, Greg Stigall and Allan Houston – net 65

• Closest-to-the-pin, Tom Bullis, Jackie Del Castillo and Richard Mead

• Long-drive honors, Jackie Del Castillo and Mike Sebastian

• Third-quarter Most Improved Golfer, Jackie Del Castillo

Although The Third Thursday Thieves are all about playing low-key tournaments and enjoying the game of golf, they pause several times a year to recognize those who actually improve their game. Yes, this really happens in rare instances. Del Castillo, who had quite a day, has lowered her index from 17.0 to 14.5 over the past three months, a 9 percent improvement ratio. A rather impressive feat given that Del Castillo has been playing golf for only five years. In the interest of marital harmony, hubby Richard’s index will not be posted in this space.
