Have a 'Super' time at The Downs Sports Bar and Grill

Looking for a great place to watch the Super Bowl? Settle into one of the comfortable overstuffed chairs at The Downs Sports Bar and Grill in Bonsall. With 18 televisions, including one with a 62-inch screen, you won’t miss a second of the game!

On February 6, ‘The Downs’ will be serving a Mexican buffet for $12 and also offering a package golf tournament/Mexican buffet at $100; prize ‘giveaways’ will also be included.

If you dare to take your eyes off of the television screen, both the indoor and patio tables offer sweeping views of the velvet green golf course, sparkling ponds and Bonsall hills in the distance. One elderly diner said that she could “just sit here all day.”

The noise level is a bit elevated, but then, you don’t come to a sports bar and grill for peace and quiet. Besides, it’s a busy, happy chatter, not unlike London pub chatter. Today a conglomerate of patrons recline in the cushy chairs: exuberant golfers, a family of twelve celebrating something and a couple of elderly men quietly playing cards. They are all lighthearted and unmindful of each other.

The Downs offers a wide selection of food: salads, sandwiches, pizza and a ‘Baja’ menu, all of which is served from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 6 a.m. until midnight on Saturday and Sunday. Dinner items are served from 5 p.m. to closing. Also, a new menu is in the works, which will include ‘low-carb’ items.

The ‘19th Hole Club Sandwich’ ($8.50) is a winner with turkey, bacon, tomato, Swiss cheese, and avocado piled high on toasted sourdough. It’s a bit difficult to eat because of its size but well worth it!

Another marvelous menu item is the $11.95 ‘Walnut Salmon Salad.’ The salad is generously embellished with a fresh fire-grilled salmon fillet crusted with diced walnuts and served on a bed of mixed greens. The walnuts intensify the flavor of the salmon and the raspberry vinaigrette dressing gives it an extra punch.

To further enhance the festive mood prevalent at The Downs, karaoke ‘happens’ every Friday and Saturday evening from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. But what’s really important is that — golfer and non-golfer alike — people seem to love it here!

You will find the The Downs Sports Bar and Grill at San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort, 31474 Golf Club Drive in Bonsall.
